Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
We can shoot for Soul Man as soon as this Thursday or next Thursday at the latest and build out the schedule from there. Are we thinking maybe 8:30 pm ET to start? Can even go to 8 pm if its not too early for PTers

Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
I'm mad that I came back in March/April, then took the summer and fall off and missed all these movies. Especially Jackie Brown. I just went back and read the thread of you all watching it and I'm going to have to watch it for the first time in ... I don't know when. My 9-year-old last week asked me what my favorite book was, and I answered Rum Punch and pretty much wouldn't tell her any more about it.
How do you all get your death notices since I left?
Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
In the summer of '98 I hammered through an obscene number of Elmore Leonard books in a 2.5 week period. I basically carried around a paper back and just finding a nice place to read. When I finished the book I either gave it to someone (usually a stranger) or just leave it some where with a note to enjoy.Reaper wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:47 pm I'm mad that I came back in March/April, then took the summer and fall off and missed all these movies. Yeah, that works best for me. I think we can fill in February with Soul Man and Savages and then go from there on the future schedule. I would totally be down to clown with MacGruber. I love that movie.

Is Savages the Philip Seymour Hoffman/Laura Linney one?

I mean, MacGruber seems like a perfect choice especially with the new series coming out sometime later this year.

Oliver Stone's take on the War on Drugs, based on the novel written by Don Winslow.Johnny Carwash wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 10:20 am Is Savages the Philip Seymour Hoffman/Laura Linney one?
Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Blake Lively, Benicio del Toro, Salma Hayek, and John Travolta are the big names. 50% critics on Rotten Tomatoes, 54% audience. I've watched it a few times and I wouldn't say it's good, more that it's interesting and can have widely varied reactions, even from scene to scene.
It may not be great due to following the thread and the movie at the same time, but I don't think that is a reason to not do it.

^Thanks DSafe.
I haven't seen MacGruber, but sounds like it would be a good choice from the enthusiasm here.
Other suggestions (including carry-overs from last time):
They Live
The Running Man
Total Recall
Big Trouble in Little China
Dragnet (1987) - Thought of this with Christopher Plummers passing; not great but an entertaining 80's time capsule comedy with prime "wacky" Tom Hanks before he became more of a dramatic actor

Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
I think a lot folks forget that Tom's first true big break was as a cross dresser on Bosom Buddies. He parlayed that into his lead in Splash and shortly after that he landed Bachelor Party.
I think, around this time, he was a guest star on Family Ties as the lovable uncle with a hidden drinking problem. But most of his early stuff (80s) was pretty goofy.
I think people also forget that apart from Big and Splash, he had a run of box office clunkers in the 80s, like Burbs, Money Pit and Joe Versus the Volcano (happens that my first date with my now wife was Money Pit, and I actually really liked Joe Vs.)

Have you gone back to watch it? It just makes me very tense.
And now I'm seeing chedda come at me. I'm not saying they are bad movies, but they were not received well by critics (and i don't think the box office numbers are great, but I'm too lazy to look it up.)

Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
I watched a brief portion of the "Batman" movie from 1966 yesterday and... it could work quite nicely. In about a 15-second span I got to see Adam West swirl milk in a snifter while on a date with Lee Meriwether, then when they left in a horse-drawn carriage, it was revealed that the name of the restaurant was "The Folded Arms".Johnny Carwash wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:40 pm ^Thanks DSafe.

Not saying it's good, because it's certainly not, but between the intentional camp and the jokes for adults like those I mentioned, maybe...

Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
I have a vague memory of watching Hanks on Inside the Actors Studio way back when, and James Lipton asked him what his least favorite movie/role was. He quickly said Turner & Hooch, which was probably because he had to work with a dog, but he said he just didn't like the script or it didn't come out as he hoped. Most of the student audience proceeded to gasp and/or sigh seemingly in disagreement, in that most of them really liked it, which made him kind of rethink his stance on the film.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 4:35 pmBesmirch the Burbs again at your own peril.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:55 pm I think a lot folks forget that Tom's first true big break was as a cross dresser on Bosom Buddies. Re: Upcoming Swamp Quarantine Movie Night Schedule
The Burbs is vastly superior to The Money Pit, maybe because the characters in the former are more relatable (despite being caricatures, which is no mean feat).Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 4:36 pmHave you gone back to watch it? It just makes me very tense.

This is the level of comedy - pretty funny stuff

Gonna throw this out again, though the only option I can find to watch it is paying Amazon for the SD(!) version which might be a non-starter...

An absolutely deranged and completely entertaining piece of work from the completely insane Ken Russell. (Featuring the young Hugh Grant)

Either of the two Carpenter movies would be a good choice.
I haven't seen MacGruber but have heard it talked up, so I'd be up for that one as well.
Dragnet was my suggestion, but I might like it more than others would.
