Yup. Let's see who budges. We're a long way away from a super league. FAs might block it. Governments might block it.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 10:13 pm feels like the all-in counter to the proposed champions league changes (which suck too). there's nothing really wrong with the champions league as is!

Why would they have listened to him for more than 30 seconds? What a babaca!

Are the cameras still rolling for the All or Nothing series at Tottenham? I'd love to see the footage of these discussions. I imagine Delle is staring at him with a huge grin.

I always admire how the English soccer press doesn’t just go after the low hanging fruit, it bakes a delicious low hanging fruit pie:

VAR has got to go.
That red card in the West Ham/Chelsea game was inexplicble.

I'm Chelsea fan and I agree that it was ridiculous. I'm not sure why it's VAR's fault though. The ref got a great look at it and made the wrong call anyway. I have no idea why.

The VAR system just doesn't work - and you're right, that ref sucked.

That's not on VAR, that's on the ref's interpretation of VAR

But if it hadn't have been for the VAR system, the ref wouldn't have had a chance to make that call.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:21 pm That's not on VAR, that's on the ref's interpretation of VAR

Sure but without VAR, the ref would miss a thousand other things, the things that caused VAR to be implemented in the first place. You're blaming the tools instead of the user.Pruitt wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 4:39 pmBut if it hadn't have been for the VAR system, the ref wouldn't have had a chance to make that call.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:21 pm That's not on VAR, that's on the ref's interpretation of VAR

No need to split hairs here - VAR in the EPL sucks. Sure the tools are fine, but the way they are being used is trash.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 5:24 pmSure but without VAR, the ref would miss a thousand other things, the things that caused VAR to be implemented in the first place. Heard on one of the myriad of soccer pods I consume that VAR is much worse and/or much more used in EPL than other major European leagues.Pruitt wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 5:25 amNo need to split hairs here - VAR in the EPL sucks. Re: EPL 2020/21
Not that these aren’t major issues, but it’s really just two, right? (1) The offsides nonsense and (2) officials not calling things because VAR is there to back them up, but part of VAR is leaning on the on-field call? Those seem, in theory, fixable.

Re: EPL 2020/21
100% agree with this. The worst part of VAR is when they pull out the lines to see if an elbow is a millimeter beyond the foot of the defender. My understanding is that VAR is supposed to check for an obvious missed call. If you need to draw all the colored lines across the field to determine fractions of an inch, that's not an obvious missed call. It's stupid, as the video guy could stop the frame a microsecond earlier and get the opposite call. You can't select the exact frame the ball left the passers foot, so why treat it as a perfect science? Prime example on Friday in the Arsenal v. Everton game. VAR checking on a penalty called on the field, VAR confirms, then goes back 15 seconds prior to the penalty and calls offside by a fraction of an inch. Completely outside the purpose, and taking away goals on ticky tacky shit. Nobody likes that. When I was a referee, they changed the offside rule, it used to be if you were even with the last defender you were offside, they changed it to make even onside in order to allow more scoring and game flow. Basically tie goes to the runner, and if it was too close to tell, you erred on the side of letting the play continue. I think with VAR, if any part of the offensive player is even with any part of the defender, they should allow the play to count.

Re: EPL 2020/21
I thought this was the rule ... until VAR came out and they started calling offside for the attacker's hand being ahead of the defender's knee or whatever. The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 7:16 amWhen I was a referee, they changed the offside rule, it used to be if you were even with the last defender you were offside, they changed it to make even onside in order to allow more scoring and game flow. I like your suggestion. But if they aren't comfortable going that far offensively, they should use the "where are the dicks" test. If the attacker's dick is even with or behind the defender's, it's not offside.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Re: EPL 2020/21
Definitely a 1/6 feel to this, and not just because of the breathless commentary. Like some of these guys (and Lowe) can’t believe they made it as far as they did. English soccer hooligans seem less prone to violence than MAGAs though.

Like the 1/6ers, these people are so f'ing dumb that even given a legitimate reason to keep your face covered whilst committing the crime they still don't.

Very strange watching how non-aggressive the stewards and police were. They were down right helpful to the guy who lost his shoe (who was also the guy throwing TV camera tripods).

Time to earn it now.
Re: EPL 2020/21
Man that Chelsea-Arsenal game was frustrated. Chelsea completely dominated, but lost 1-0 due to a horrific back-pass-that-was-very-nearly-an-awful-own-goal from Jorginho. Seriously, Arsenal looked like one of the worst teams Chelsea's played all year, but Chelsea couldn't put it in the net (well, other than the time Pulisic actually did but was offsides). Bah, soccer can be frustrating.
