What's the last food you found yourself surprised to like? I don't mean things you've never tried, but that you used to think it was gross and now you actually like it.

I don't have any, but you guys go ahead.

Just kidding! Mine are bread & butter pickles and feta (in small amounts)

I posted on this board a while ago about my disdain for pickles & onions. I'm starting to soften on the onion thing. I actually like them if they're cooked in some fashion in or on certain things now. Not all the way there but moving that direction...

Pickles, however, still belong in Hell.

I'm pretty ambivalent about generic button mushrooms, but varieties beyond that I've been drawn to more. Always hated any kind growing up.

This always tends to gross ppl out:

One of my favorite empty calorie snack is a pickle and mayo sandwich. White or wheat, doesn't matter.

I don't really have something that I didn't like before, but like now that I'm older. I'd say I used to really not like bean curd in Chinese food and now tend to like it in hot and sour soup. If that counts.

So, a tuna sandwich without the tuna?

Mushrooms would be closest in that I can tolerate them, but would probably still avoid the dish if it had them as an ingredient.

Mayo in general I'd say. Used to always get sandwiches without. Now I generally don't (depending on the sandwich -- mayo still never belongs on hamburgers)

Couldn't disagree more about that. A perfect burger to me is raw chopped onions, mayo, and cheese. Patty size like the one you get at In-N-Out.

If you're talking about a mayo-based "special sauce" or even some kind of spicy aioli or something I'll hear you out. Just plain mayo is dumb.

i kinda feel the exact same way :) - have long "hated" mayo but now when it comes on a sandwich (occasionally eating the remains of one of my kids') i'm like "meh" it's fine.

Flavoured mayo though (aioli)?? slop that shit on as much as you want - totally different ballgame. Like a garlic or pesto flavour - yes sir.

Olives are, I think, my only total food aversion. I had a really good pizza in Asbury where they accidentally added tapenade so perhaps some progress made there.

I think my biggest overall gainer from younger to older is anchovies. Used to be something my dad could order knowing it meant he'd get his own pizza or dish and now I love them.

No! You don't put pickles on tuna.

Have to say honey.

Hated it as a kid and avoided it for years. Now I really like it.

Brussel sprouts. Used to hate them, now I really enjoy grilled or roasted brussel sprouts. I even got brussel sprouts instead of fries the last time I went to SmashBurger, even though they were significantly more calories than fries.

Not really? We're talking deli spears, sliced down the middle and laid out on mayo slathered bread.

One thing I keep thinking I'll grow into liking are olives... Just given the types of food I like.

Nope. I hate olives. Fuck up a pizza or a salad if they're in there.

Maybe haggis? Tried it in Scotland, didn't love it, but wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. Tasted like Thanksgiving bread stuffing with a ground-meat texture. I think it grosses people out for what it is, rather than how it tastes.

When I was a kid I "invented" a sandwich of pickle slices, potato/tortilla chips (latter are better) and mustard on white bread. I'd still eat one.

Not to get off-subject, but I eat tomato sandwiches all the time. Fresh sliced tomatoes, some cracked pepper, maybe a little Italian dressing and toasted bread. Tastes great, cheap and easy to make.

And olives are the worst. My aforementioned new taste for feta comes from a pasta salad side at the cafe down the street...that I still have to pick the olives out of. In summary, Greece is a land of contrasts.

I guess I'm evolved with olives to the point that I can pick them out of a salad and still eat the salad. I used to be so grossed out, if olives got near a dish, it was dead to me. (This summer, out at a restaurant in Cape Cod and they put olives in a South West salad. Like, wtf? I picked it out, but the woman at the socially distanced outdoor table near us lost her shit. She tried to pull us into her beef, because we had agreed with her that it was weird before the waitress showed back up.)

Though, I'm not messing with a pizza that had olives on it. Just not worth it to me.

I'm surprised by all the olive hate. Black olives are bland and inoffensive. I like green olives, but I can understand not liking them. Kalamata olives and feta is one of the best flavor combos invented. Love me a tapenade, Muffaletta sandwiches are amazing.

I agree with Max and Brian on mayo. I never put it on anything but if a burger comes with it I can eat it now.

I have come around on olives. Especially on pizza. One local place uses kalamata olives which taste stronger. I surprised myself by liking them.

Brussels sprouts smell like bum. No thanks.

Growing up I never enjoyed green beans or tomatoes. Through the years I have come to appreciate them when they are fresh out of my parent's garden. Still don't get tomatoes on any sandwich from a restaurant unless I know they are in season and locally sourced.

But go straight to hell if you offer me green bean salad at Thanksgiving. I may slit your throat with a butter knife.

Mayo as a spread I can only take on a BLT, as a dressing on various salads I like it in moderation.
I won't ever ask for it on a sandwich and I find that if I get by a mistake I have to scrape off about 98% of it. I feel it's like mushrooms (which I will pick out of most things, but I can eat if they're hidden) that kitchens think if you request them you want about 17 servings in your dish.

I like brussel sprouts now, used to hate them, but I've also found that my mom isn't that great of a cook. Like to over boil and under season almost everything. I think a lot of times when we're introduced to things it's those things not prepared properly.

and the proper burger is cheese, green chile, and nothing else.

Canned peas, peas, green beans, etc. are wrong. The only palatable canned veg is corn.

I'll allow Rush's submission of corn as a good canned non-vegetable.

As for the actual thread. Just veggies in general for me. I was always a pretty picky eater and then I learned you can roast veggies instead of boil the shit out of them like my mum used to and most of them are actually pretty great.
