Some Friday fun

Question 1: What would the you of 20 years ago be most surprised that the you of today is using from a technological standpoint?

Question 2: What is your one bold prediction for technology for 2040? So 20 years from now, what will yourself of 20 years from now be shocked that yourself from today didn't know about?

My answers:

1. Spotify. As a collector of CDs I would never thought that all music would be in one place.

2. Flying cars. I will be shocked when we all own one.

1. Carrying the internet around everywhere I go.

2. Travel as we know it won't exist because there will be cameras everywhere allowing for real-time virtual visits. You'll be able to just hang out with someone on the other side of the country for a few hours at night and actual physical travel will be viewed as a hipster deal (in terms of desire and ability to do so).

1) A macbook. I was in IT at the time and was told MACS ARE EVIL!

2) Diagnostic tests on children that will forecast with near certainly the predisposition for any number of maladies with near perfect accuracy. And there will be the equivalent of Anti-Vaxxers to go along with it.

Will we be able to hug virtually? Or virtual hooker? That would be kind of sad.

The one bit of technology that amazes me - and that I use every day - is Spotify. Just the idea that all the music I could possibly want (and I have some pretty obscure musical tastes) is amazing. But I'll go with the fact that we all carry super computers/libraries/entertainment centres in our pockets.

Future? God only knows - going to be some nasty innovations, but to be optimistic - remote diagnostics so that anyone with a phone can get decent medical care.

I think I'm more on the flip side of this. Like if you told 25 y/o me that we would have the internet on our phones by everyone in 20 years, I'd look back to simply 1990 and then I'd say "yeah, I can see that." Instead, I would've suspected that if the internet was so accessible to everyone, I would simply assume that the general populace would be a lot smarter, and conspiracy theories would die off. People could just use their phones and then debunk them.

Instead, they are more prevalent. It truly would boggle my mind that access to all this information would make people dumber and more susceptible to bullshit.

It really is a massive disappointment that speaks poorly of human nature.

This absolutely remarkable invention that gives practically anyone access to all the information one can imagine, that allows for instantaneous communication between people half a world away from each other is being used by so many to inflame and cause hatred.

1. It's the smartphone. Part of the reason Spotify is a hard sell for me for this one is, 20 years ago, I worked on a show (affiliated with Interscope and Universal Music Group) where the majority of us had Napster on our computers. It was all online.

2. I am loathe to think that far into the future because so many of the current "technological breakthroughs" are just ways to ruin individual people's lives with thin veneers of disguise.

Well - what if everybody could put out their music (which they essentially can)? I would think there would be a huge glut of shitty music (which there is). Or their movies/videos (Youtube). So yeah, I get your point and it's probably human nature to think that but in reality if you allow everybody to be a creator, you get a ton of shittiness. You get a Horsemodel predicting wrong outcomes to NFL games. etc etc

1. Agree. Hell, Napster tried to be Spotify for a bit after they got shut down as a PtP platform. A bunch have tried something similar since. The difference with Spotify is that they actually made it work.

2. I'm with AB - I think there are going to be a ton of cures or at least treatments for diseases that aren't even on our radar today. I also think materials science will be ahead of where it is now like tenfold (things like graphene batteries, etc).

3. Also there will be a huge company in 2040 and it will be whoever solves hair loss once and for all.
