Navas had to wait, as it looked like the guy running at the far post (Foden?) was going to get a touch on it. Really tough play, because if he goes for the cross and the attacker gets a touch, he is diving out of the way of that shot. From the reverse angle behind the keeper, it looked like the attacker was going to get there.
At that level, he has to be able to discern that the attacker was too far away (on the 6 when the ball was hit) for him to get there and treat that like a shot. The more dangerous aspect was the ball going far post.

I get that it's a tough play, but it's a soft goal.

Kind of like in hockey when a goalie is beaten short side because his skate/pad aren't flush to the pipe and a guy sneaks one in with with sneaky/great shot. It's not a howler, but I'm sure if you asked the goalie he'd tell you he should've had it.

Second goal, no issue. Wall discipline, obviously.

Putting a finer point on it, if the attacker was about 2 yards closer and had slid? Sure, almost impossible for the goalie. But you look at that replay and the attacker is 4 or 5 yards from a wickedly in-swinging ball.

Willian scored like that two or three times off of free kicks in a single season for Chelsea a few years back (maybe the year they won the league under Conte). It's tough for the goalie when he's trying to deal with multiple runners and expecting a header.

Absolutely tough, no question.

I would just argue that this wasn't as tough as some of those from Willian.

Head to about 5:30 on that... That's a nightmare for a goalie. Multiple attackers and much closer to being a danger.

And my initial reaction (woof) wasn't really that Navas was shambolic or anything, but I'd be curious to hear his thoughts on those 2. He's certainly taking some shit in the media, fair or not.

That header + Bernardo's awful giveaway could very easily have this dead level right now so "Mister D is Feeling Fortunate". Nice that we're in finals or epic collapse territory now.

Fernandinho is truly the master of the dark arts. Absolutely baits Di Maria into that red because he knows he's gonna meltdown. Takes 40 tactical fouls before a card himself. Pretty much the definition of a guy you hate playing against, but would love on your team.

Tons of sites saying Pulisic in the starting lineup.

My initial reaction was that his celebration was a little too self-congratulatory. (I don't rate Werner highly.)

Huh. I'm fairly ambivalent, but he didn't do some kind of Ronaldo spin jump thing or point to his name on his back or slide on his knees into the corner.

Tangent... I absolutely loved the Mount-Pulisic slide into the corner. Top shelf.

Subplot with spiciness: Eden Hazard celebrating for quite some time on the field with his former 'mates.

I had the sound off, but found it really weird... mainly for the length of time. Shake hands, sure... He was out there for a very long time slapping backs and half hugging guys for way too long.

Meh, seemed like a nothingburger to me, but I'm sure the Spanish press will be all over it.

ESPN has a lengthy discussion with former players, VERY united in saying it was a really bad look.

And, yeah, the Spanish press will absolutely make a meal out of it, but the other folks that I'm sure are over Eden are the Real Madrid fans. He played like shit (for what he's supposed to be for the squad) and hasn't look the part for most of his time with the club.

Just really bad optics given the gravity of the loss.

Well someone is the USMNT locker room this summer will have a Champions League Championship Medal....but guessing Pulisic has a better chance of being on the field for part of the match.

He's been injured since the moment he hit the Iberian peninsula. It's likely some of that is on him for not training properly, but who can really say.

Just finished watching the game. Man, Chelsea looked good. I thought they played well in the first half even though Madrid had the bulk of the possession. But then Chelsea just completely dominated the second half. It could easily have been 4-0 or so. That's the best game Havertz has played for the Blues.

I also loved the way Pulisic played off the bench, but I'd also like to see him start. He's really playing at his peak right now, very similar to how he was last summer for the end of last season. I'm not sure who you take off to play him though, as the Havertz-Werner pairing up front is FINALLY starting to pay dividends and you can't not play Mount either. So maybe Christian as a deadly sub is his best fit for the moment against top teams.
