Just wanted to add that when I played, right before showing my answer for FJ! (I was sitting at third), he mentioned that it must be a thrill to have my parents out to watch me, and then waved to my Dad during the closing credits. Alex name-dropping and acknowledging my Dad is truly one of the special moments in his life.

They say don’t meet your heroes because you’ll end up disappointed. Well I don’t know if I’d go as far to say he was my hero, but he more than lived up to his hype. Rest In Peace to the G.O.A.T.

Any other TV personality been a daily figure in people’s lives for that long a (more or less unbroken) stretch? He outlasted Carson right? I can vaguely remember when Jeopardy! restarted in the 80s and my parents, or maybe it was my grandparents (I picture this happening at my paternal grandparents house) complaining about there being a new host.

And would have gone with “This game show host died on November 8th 2020” as the thread title, respectfully of course.

I'd been commenting for the last two weeks of shows that he looked a bit better than in previous weeks. (Shows taped 3-4 months in advance)

Guy had a really good life though. And when he dropped by our audition in Toronto, he was a legitimately funny guy.

In all seriousness, pretty smart of them to go with temporary hosts for awhile. Ken Jennings is a good start too. No one is going to be able to replace Alex Trebek but giving someone a fair shot after a few months of guest hosts is a smart way to do it.

Someone who would do great at it, but I doubt would be interested would be Jon Stewart (assuming he plays it straight, just like Alex did 99.9 percent of the time). He has a lot of the qualities you'd look for -- smart, funny and engaging even when they're not making jokes, quick on his feet.

I see what you mean, but he'd have a hard time keeping the comedy reflex in check.

Drew Carey does a good job, but his show is a lot livelier than "Jeopardy."

I would think someone with a more dry sense of humor would be best. I’m thinking like Rich Eisen or Dan Patrick. Total professionals with great timing. It’s going to take time getting into the role and making it their own. It’s not like there are many people like Regis out there who have been on tv for 50 years and can just drop in cold and do well.

Bottom line is you never want to be the guy that replaces the guy...you want to be the guy that replaces the guy that replaced the guy.

Twitter wants LeVar Burton and he'd be great in a lot of respects, but I just don't know. Though he showed some definite humor chops on his two Community appearances.

Didn't Dan Patrick host Sports Jeopardy back in the day? He's not Olbermann, but probably a little too smarmy jock for this role.

Agreed. "Jeopardy" still focuses on the contestants' knowledge and the strategies employed to win (playing the board, ringing in at the exact moment, etc.). One of the things that made Trebek such a good host was that he was almost always incisive and short with his comments, bringing the focus back to the board because the pace of play is important in getting more to more answers.

If they’re going to cycle a few options, Ivanka Week could be hilarious in an “we were all in on the joke the whole time” sorta way. Line her up with some impossible pronunciations, maybe an obvious mistake anyone else would catch, etc.

I looked at Ray Combs Wiki page, because I was curious to see how long he hosted. 6 years is a pretty good run. After reading this quote from his final episode, I had to find the video.

"You know, I've done this show for six years and this [is] the first time I had a person that actually got no points and I think it's a damn fine way to go out. Thought I was a loser until you walked up here, you made me feel like a man!"

It wasn't quite as mean as it reads, but there was a hint of bitterness. Then you can see him storm off during the credits and the contestants look a little confused and try to waive at him. Wiki said he walked off the set, stormed to his dressing room and walked off without speaking to anyone.




I knew he killed himself, but man did he have a rough year or two. They tried to create a new version of Family Feud that failed in the first season. He was in a car accident that caused spinal damage and "severe and consistent pain," he had two comedy clubs fold, his house was foreclosed and he got divorced and presumably child support for 6 kids. He also owed $100,000 in back taxes, $150,000 in loans and credit card debt and a mortgage on his California home. I felt the walls closing in reading his page.
