I was in Naples in 1984 (part of my cross-Europe backpacking trip), and the city suddenly went berserk, Street parties, cars honking all night long. It was the night Napoli announced that they'd signed Maradona.

I knew about soccer, but that night was a revelation - my God it was crazy. And he hadn't played a game for them yet.

For all of the crazy stories you hear about Maradona in Italy and afterward, it is nice to see this kind of thing bubble up.

What? That's amazing! I can only imagine what that was like that night.

Similar story, studying abroad in Spring 99 in Prague was what got me into Man U. British/Irish pubs were the one place were I could really communicate, and I got really into that team that year. I never knew which pub would have which game on which night, I had no cell phone and internet was only accessible at cafes. I met up with Oiler in Paris, and we immediately hopped a train for Barcelona. It wasn't until we were on the train that we realized that it was full of Man U fans making the trek to the Champions League final at Camp Nou.

Yep. 1987 and 1990 are still the only Serie A titles in Napoli's history. Serie A was stacked at that time, with the Dutch-led Milan, German-led Inter, and star studded Sampdoria and Juventus.

They also won the UEFA Cup in 89, which was a cup for 2nd placed teams. But they never had the luck in Champions Cup. They played Real Madrid in the first round which was ridiculous.

Jesus. Not surprised, but horrific, and I only read the little bit before the paywall.
