Agreeing with everyone's love of this season's Fargo and Jon Hamm but

[+] spoiler: his character is turning into one of the most awful, uncomfortable even to watch characters I've seen. There have been so many evil characters in movies and tv, but this one just seems worst than the rest -- maybe it's his acting or maybe it's a little too much realism knowing there are people like him

Anyone catch the first episode of "True Detective" (with Jodie Foster) last night?

[+] spoiler: Seems like it could be good...but the "police work" stuff is remarkably cliched. Lots of lines that you'd hear in any other police procedural, included a "You're off the case!"

I did. I agree with spoiler. But the whole thing for True Detective is freaky occult type detective story. And I forgive most anything that John Hawkes is in.

I also thought that using a song with the lyrics "Come...Come...Come" during the sex scene was pretty obvious.

[+] spoiler: I was too distracted by the check piercings, gauges holes, and bad tattoos.

The lady who plays that character is a professional boxer (18-7-1 with 5 KOs). She identifies as native (unrecognized tribe) and from what I have wiki'd the character and her real life interests overlap.

If I wanted to watch Doctor Who which season/version should I start with? From the very, very beginning?

There's the UK version that ran from 1963-1989 with 695 episodes and then in 2005 it was rebooted and has 15 seasons and 195 episodes (and counting).

This is one show that is completely in my cultural blind spot.

(And I may or may not want to watch because Magic: The Gathering has a crossover set with the brand.)

You can definitely pop into the 2005 Eccelston series and be ok. I had some general background knowledge from seeing some of the Baker Who as a kid and was fine. That still gives you a ton to watch. I only kept up through the end of Matt Smith’s run.

Going back to the real beginning seems like a lot of work.

Hopefully your uncle jlo sees this and weighs in.

I decided to finally watch True Detective, so I've watched the first couple of episodes of S1. Woody and (especially) McConaughey are great. But also, man, I was not totally aware of Alexandra Daddario's game. Holy shit.

Anybody watch The Traitors? It's a big backstabby social deduction reality TV show game hosted by Alan Cumming.

He chooses a couple of people to be traitors and then the games begin.

This season has former reality TV 'celebs' and also John Bercow. (Which apparently makes sense.)

Endorse 100%. The background of the Timelords is clearly explained rather quickly with Eccleston and the effects are so dated on any of those older episodes that it looks like a satire.

Cool cool. I happened to see there's a Doctor Who channel on Pluto TV and watched some of it. And you're right. Soooooo dated. Almost can't take the show seriously with how old it looked.

i second the book! my late father-in-law got it for me a few years before he died and it took me a while to crack the spine but it's much more interesting than i'd initially given it credit for. good tribute to him on the shelf too

I finished S1. Worthy of all the hype. Great southern gothic noir. Oh, and I love that they picked The Handsome Family for the theme song. A coworker shared some CDs of them with me about 20 years ago and I loved them. I hadn't listened to them in a while, so I was thankful for the reminder.

It felt like they hadn't actually rehearsed that one and were reading it for the first time.

Even the monologue, especially when JT came out was weirdly flat... As was the Barry Gibbs Talk Show skit.

Stuff that usually kills just kind of didn't hit.
