I don't know how much you can really blame an umpire there. He's not really looking at the batter, he's looking at the pitch.

Pitches are fast and move a lot, so it takes a lot of concentration (and it's not surprising that umpires miss a bunch of calls). That should be a booth review.

I’m more interested to see if the umpires choose to punish Conforto for making their colleague make himself look bad.

The Gamecast summary says it was reviewed and upheld. If so that’s worse than missing the play at full speed (and I agree it wasn’t obvious, or at least not different from 100 Barry Bonds HBPs)

They reviewed whether or not the batter was hit, not whether or not Conforto stayed out over the plate to get hit. The ump admitted after the game he botched the call.

Not sure what play you saw, but it was 100% obvious what Conforto was doing.

All’s I know is I watched it once at full speed without the benefit of knowing what had happened and it wasn’t at all obvious what was going on. I’ll never get that opportunity again. That’s how hindsight works.

But you’re watching a baseball game for fun, not the one person in charge of objectively tracking the pitch. Umps know to be aware of this sort of shit.

If you gave me ten picks from every starter in the league I think I could have guessed who inside those ten picks.

Okay but how many different places are they supposed to be focusing on.

I wonder, is this the kind of thing he other umps can advise on? The other three umps are in a much better position to judge something like that.

I’m pretty sure the home plate ump has to request input from the umps out on the field. “Looked like he didn’t even get out of the way. Was he hanging out over the plate? Cuz I was in the process of calling a strike when it bounced off his elbow pad..”

He saw everything and started calling a strike, then noticed the batter was hit, and it's his job to know the rules. Ideally other umps should help, but he saw everything and simply messed it up.

Maybe replay is too new, but had he played it right he calls it a strikeout and goes to video where he can decide if Conforto was hit and if he'd leaned in. His call boxed him into the wrong decision.

Are the Braves wearing their 1974 unis at home all year? Because if so, that’s a great decision.

Yeah but they're only a tiny bit underwater on run differential.

The Cubs have the worst run differential in the Majors going into today with the second-easiest schedule so far.

I'm thinking that dynasty might not materialize after all.

Maybe so. But these Yankees are all about launch angles and swinging out of their shoes. And then there's the IF defense. There's a reason the fans started throwing baseballs out onto the field last night. They're playing lousy, undisciplined, and uninspired baseball.

That's funny because Cub fans say the same things about the Cubs.

Sean Kazmar grounded into a double play today. Why does that matter? It marked his first MLB PA since 2008, 12 years and 2006 days ago. Every article I read is ambiguous as to whether that breaks Minnie Minoso's record or it's the longest since.

Imagine waiting 12 years to get back to the bigs, and grounding into a double play in your first at-bat.

Apparently he’s spent the past several years on the Braves AAA team as a utility IF. This trip to the bigs was to let his sons (who weren’t alive at the time) see him play in the bigs?

That’s the story I’m hearing from my buddy in Decatur, anyway.

(My guess immediately after the game yesterday was Thames, and I'm sticking to that one.)

Corbin Burnes wasn't quite himself tonight. Let the Padres touch him up for 4 hits in 6 innings and only struck out 10 of them. So far in 24 innings pitched he has 40 strikeouts, 0 walks, and has allowed 8 hits. He set a new MLB record for a starter when he got to 36 strikeouts without a walk to begin a season.
