Swamp NHL Playoff Pool 2021

It's....BACK.

Who will be this year's third liner with a hot stick? Which superstar will get injured by a dirty hit in game 1? Which team will play all seven-game series but still only manage to average 2 goals a game? Who will join the Jets in getting swept?

The Swamp Playoff Pool is here to determine who knows their hockey the most, a sport that is notoriously logical and not at all random.

To play:

Players are separated into groups that change how much their playoff points are worth - so group 6 players get 2.2 points per goal/assist, while group 1 players get just 1pt per goal/assist. There is no requirement in how many or few players you take from any group.

choose 14 players from the list of the top 100 scorers from this season (plus Nikita Kucherov). You can only have a maximum of 3 players from any single NHL team. Any player not listed can be chosen as a group 10 player.

choose 2 teams from the team group. Teams get 3 points for a win and -1 point for a loss. Teams do not count towards your 3-players-per-team rule.

Goals and assists are all worth the same. Overtime goals count double.

New This Year:
All entries can make two trades at the start of round 3. This would be to swap out eliminated/injured players for active ones (still keeping within the 3 per team rule). You would only accumulate points going forward from the player you acquire, not what they scored before you picked them up). This will hopefully keep more interest in scoring later in the contest, as well as create more incentive to take different risks in your initial player picking.

Me, Chedda and wlu-lax entered in so far. Looks like US games will start this weekend so we're looking at a Saturday night entry deadline.

Here is last year's spreadsheet if anyone wants to look through the stats for patterns and efficiencies.

It looks like the higher-multiplyer groups had more average points but also a higher standard deviation (higher risk, higher reward).

Degen won by... a lot, and didn't have a single player from the cup-winning Lightning (but was pretty much the only one to go heavy on Dallas and the Islanders).

Since the Sabres are a fictitious team I made up in my dreams, my team is the Jets but I remember the 80s and fear this is about to be an ugly repeat. Holy cow thinking about a Leafs v Oilers matchup is pretty cool. Kurri and Gretzky vs. Wendel and Gary Leeman....LFG!


I'm rooting for whoever comes out of the Scotia Div.

Need someone to tell me how the Pens do in the years when I play this...

I picked Sam Bennett of Florida. After doing nothing and being a healthy scratch in Calgary, he goes to Florida at the trade deadline, and scores 15 points in 10 games with the Panthers. Might be a good pick, might be a bad pick.

Even though the Bolts are my team, I avoided both them and the Panthers completely. I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen in that series, and no result would surprise me.

Sam Bennett is great playoff performer so that might be a great pick.

Actually the department of swamper safety says he just gets a minimal fine.

My logic was the caps are so beat up that I stayed away from them. Just assumed they are getting upset in round 1 or 2. However, it was not going to be a sweep, so someone on the caps will have to score. Wilson plays on the power play, gets lots of minutes and skilled. So figured he would have a nice multiplier for when he did get points. He also likely won't get a playoff suspension. Just different type of hockey in the playoffs.

and as Willie said, he did not understand why everyone got all worked up. Just a normal hockey play (shake of my head).

Canada joins the party tonight, and we've got 4 games a night for the next week at least.

Degen and wlu-lax the only people not to pick McDavid, looking prescient. Degen riding MacKinnon hat trick and Jets empty-netters to to the top of the table.

Apparently Fla's 5 on 5 xG has been great. I was smugly watching the Bolts boa constrictor the life out of the Panthers in the 3rd last night, and thinking that this team has figured out how to stifle everything. They haven't.

To be fair, Fla's 5v5 xG should be great if TB is playing a compact defense first strategy.
