The Canes are so fucking cheap.

Ehhh ... I might defer to Carolina here. They should know better than anyone if this guy (who they've waived before) is legit or if he just caught a 20 game hot streak that exceed anything he did in the AHL. Given the always weird valuations of goalies, they may have seen the high 3rd and decided there was value in jumping the market.

How good is analytics in isolating goalie performance from the team in front? Seems like boxcar stats might not reflect his value on the Wings.

Agree to a point, but not sure what their plan is as far as who's playing goalie this year. Whomever it is likely is going to cost more than $3M a year.

I’d guess the Canes are looking for Mrazek to be healthy and in form as their goalie.

My god the Flyers did it again. If everything reported is true, in the last two days they've subtracted Gostisbehere, Hagg, 1st, 2nd and 2nd (2023) in order to make room for Rasmus Ristolainen. Just amazing.

Just unbelievable.

I laughed when I saw all the Buffalo fans on Twitter saying, "I can't believe the Sabres won a trade!"

Not only did they win, they bet against Philadelphia in the process by getting a 2023 2nd. That could easily be a top 40 pick.

i can't even open this thread anymore without getting bitter because fuck the Sabres. really. (so...so many reasons....)

but holy shitballs they just traded the literal worst defenceman in the NHL and got something. anything. which *includes* a 1st round pick this year. I literally would have given him away for nothing. This is a fleecing.

(it still all sucks tho because they're (apparently... i still hold out ridiculous hope they don't....) about to trade their 2 legit fantastic forwards whom they drafted and didn't do shit to build a team around. In part...because they played the worst defenceman in the NHL all.the.goddamn.time. If they had made this trade, say, 2 years ago, they'd almost be guaranteed to have made the playoffs 2 yrs ago when they missed by a half game... the mind reels.... sorry i'm just so on the verge of quitting on this franchise...)

I don't get this deal at all. Unless Philly just hates having draft picks or something. Ristolainen is on an expiring deal too, so what happens if they don't re-sign him? In fact the only way this deal makes even a lick of sense is if they somehow think if their season doesn't go the way they want that they can flip him for the draft capital they gave up at the deadline, but that's not happening.

I don't follow the NHL closely enough to have an educated opinion on this, but is there a greater chasm between good/bad as far of quality of team management in the NHL compared to other sports or am I just having recency bias from this thread from the last few days and the moves being made in that limited time are either bad signings or very lopsided trades with nothing top even out the scales?

Nothing like what’s happening today. Three guys with legit awful stats going for assets and a guy with great stats last year not drawing any return.

Don’t have all the details yet. But, it appears the Blackhawks acquired Seth Jones and gave him an eight year times 9.5 million contract!

I think the more restrictive true "hard" cap of the NHL and the cap being flat for basically three years because of COVID is really allowing the overmatched GMs of the NHL to show their asses. (Yes, the NFL definitely has more of a hard cap than the NBA, but between the much larger roster sizes and other cap shenanigans mostly not available to their NHL counterparts, it's a lot harder for mediocre NHL GMs to dig out of their mistakes.)

And, it seems every smart GM eventually becomes dumb, as every team with an extended run of success seems to eventually end up in Cap hell. (See Detroit, Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles, Ottawa...)

ETA: But some GMs are just dumb all the time like Jim Benning in Vancouver.

And yes hockey GMs are the dumbest. Just look at Free Agency Day. Let's give all the free agents the most money we possibly can on day one. In baseball, some free agents don't get signed for months!

Only second time in NHL history two NCAA players go 1-2 so needless to say it’s the first time they’re from same school (Michigan).

Michigan also first NCAA team ever to have three first-rounders same year so three in the top five is obviously a first as well.

Rangers beat guys had this reach pick for over a month which means either the front office is a full leak or this pick was always going to be traded and they had one dude as a fallback. Fucking mess if Lucius pans out.

He withdrew but officially there is no procedure for that. Players don't have to declare.

The league has no power to prevent a team from drafting whomever it chooses. Montreal wanted him and took him. He wasn't making it back to them.
