Premier League 2021-22

Looks like it should be safe for me to commission my "Mister Grealish #69" jersey by the end of the week.

Spurs are one of the 10 richest clubs in Europe, and they can not compete against the insanity that is Man City's finances.

Absolutely ridiculous - FFF is a farce and the fact that City is going to rebrand by buying two English players who are the face, heart and soul of their teams without any penalty is sickening.

Honestly, how can anyone outside of Manchester or 7th grade support that team? City fans probably have a closet full of old Warriors and Patriots gear.

The thing is, people forget how much money City makes from selling fringe players to balance the official books ... they've made over £40m for Harrison, Angelino, Ilic and Nmecha already, and the sell-on clause for Sancho has netted them another £11m. I'm sure there will be more sales, especially once Grealish is signed. So it's not like they just shit on FFP (as if FFP was still relevant lol), they actually sell well.

Same for Chelsea and Liverpool, by the way. Chelsea have made around £50m for Tomori, Guehi and Moses, while Liverpool have made almost £30m for Wilson, Awoniyi and Grujic. It's quite impressive actually how much money these clubs make by moving deadwood.

Don't take this personally, but what you've said is completely wrong.

"Balance the books?" Not even close.

In the last 14 years, City has spent $1.6 BILLION more on buying players than selling them.

BILLION.

But you don't have to be net neutral on transfers, you just can't exceed expenses beyond your revenues, right? Which is really just "we don't want any new teams spending to get into the upper echelon where the already established teams are".

All these problems go away if you just let the 16-18 biggest clubs form their own league and get out of everyone else’s hair.

I had a dream last night that Everton scored a goal that just trickled across the line. The keeper, reacting a bit too late, batted the ball back over the line at which point Richarlison kicked it back into the net, and Everton was awarded 2 goals. I woke up convinced that that was the rule, and after some coffee, I still think it should be.

We went to a Rapids game a few weeks back. The guy sitting in front of us had a City shirt on. He looked exactly like you think he would.

(and I think they have some Irish support, or did, because of their ties to Manchester.)
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Arsenal supporter Nick Hornby with a piece in SI about the aftermath of the Super League.

Fever's Glitch: How the Failed Super League Exacerbated the Fan-Owner Dynamic
In 1999, Manchester City, now the richest team in England and the reigning Premier League champion, was playing a future-defining game at Wembley Stadium. As the match approached injury time, Man City was two goals down, but there were five additional minutes to be played. City scored in the 90th and 95th minutes to take the game to extra time and eventually a penalty shootout, which it won.

The game was against little Gillingham, and it was future-defining because it was a playoff game, and it got City out of the third tier of English football. Thirteen years later, and after massive investment, it became the best team in the country. It is not impossible to imagine that if Gillingham’s keeper had pushed Paul Dickov’s 95th-minute equalizer around the post, another team might have been the beneficiary of Sheikh Mansour’s largesse. Sunderland, maybe. Or Birmingham. Or Gillingham.

I’m going to take off my city blue glasses for a second and ask this serious … isn’t that investment exactly what every single fan of every single team wants?

I disagree. I took pride, back when Arsenal used to win silverware, that they achieved it through buying 16 yos cheap, developing them into stars and either getting them into the first team or selling them for profits to buy players. Wenger was also a master at selling superstars when their value was at its peak, and their talents were on the verge of declining. Funding the fucking stadium destroyed them.

Checked Arsenal's lineup for today, and shocked to see Auba and Laca not even making the bench. I see they were both ruled out due to illness this morning. With Nketiah injured and Martinelli sitting since he just got back from the Olympics, Arsenal are down to their 5th striker and it's only Game 1!!!! Gabriel and Partey are both out for a month. So frustrated with this team already.

Of course I'd love it if Spurs were owned by a repressive sheikhdom that wasn't concerned about a bottom line.

But I think it would somehow cheapen the team's accomplishments if every off season it simply went out and bought the most expensive players available and laughed at the rules that were meant to govern the finances of the game.
