2021 MLB Playoffs

Did I hear something about the Red Sox playing the Yankees tonight?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I'll watch because I'm a baseball fan, but I can't stand the hype machine. ESPN calling it a classic before it even starts. I don't care who wins really, but I hope whichever team does, does so by 10 runs, because I don't feel like being up till 12:45 when it ends.

I'd say 2+ innings in an all-or-nothing game is not what NYY paid for (or he can still come back for Game 2 if the Yanks come back?)

The statcast is awful. After 3 PAs, they said judge and Stanton weren’t producing when it was one “big single” and a judge fly out to the track in RCF. Then they talked about the Sox employing two CF to cover the big OF in a game where they’re playing zero CF. It’s a great idea (for me) executed with whatever people they had on hand versus actual stat-smart and fluent analysts (like David Cone, for one).

Odor leading off the inning was a clear managerial fuck up. Pulling Eovaldi here feels like a far bigger one.

10 feet? Seemed way more bang bang to me. Maybe because of how far the catcher had to reach for Judge.

i don't know D, that was the first time i saw a/the statcast feed and - maybe my bar is extremely low? - but that was as good as it can get for me. I don't recall hearing a single anecdote about "heart" or intangible garbage and it was all focused on the actual game. Fng awesome. Also maybe I missed it but I didn't see one batting average posted at all which was fascinating. Gimme more.

Apropos of nothing, I only learned for the first time listening to ESPN Daily's podcast that the Bucky Dent home run was in the 7th inning. All these years, I thought it was the top of the 9th the way Red Sox fans have been carrying on about it forever. And after that inning, it was 4-2. It wasn't insurmountable. I understand this guy's mother:

My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

HA

yeah i guess i knew that (7th inning HR) but you bring up a larger point that that game has been reduced to "the bucky dent game" or whatever but holy hell, it really was among the greatest games ever and that was only one part. Also as a former Red Sox fan I think Mike Torrez always got a raw deal - he pitched a good game up into the 7th and even then what are you gonna do. "315'"

Actually Reggie's HR was the eventual game-winner, and you can make the case that Lou Piniella won the game for the yanks in RF.

I might need to blow a few hours some day and watch the whole thing. (my parents let me leave 3rd grade early that day to watch it live. i remember spilling a bowl of goldfish crackers when Yaz hit his HR and then breaking my Red Sox helmet when it was over. such maturity hahaha)

It has the potential to be a lot better but Perez just isn't the right guy for it. There are former players who have fully committed to understanding this stuff rather than "here's a guy we already use, lets shift him over".

(I also loved that with every batter on the regular feed they had "league average is 100" underneath OPS+. I didn't also love that they used OPS+ in the first place rather than start teaching people about wOBA.)

Seemed like a terrible decision to send him, but if they hadn't, it would've been first and third. Stanton had already stopped and only went to second on the throw home. A-Rod messed this up like 10 times last night, as well as calling Verdugo's hit a two-run double. You don't get a double when you get thrown out at second, numb-nuts.

And ESPN said nothing about whether or not the 6th run scored. That's like broadcaster 101 -- did the runner touch homeplate before the the other guy was tagged, and I always naturally panic that the runner going home slowed down too much. They didn't show the score going into commercials and waited forever before showing it in the next inning. And then they didn't even talk about Verdugo's baserunnning. Was it stupid ending the inning because he should have known the Yankees had no chance throwing out the second runner? Guess that discussion would have interrupted the 3 hour discussion about Bucky Dent.

Why is the broadcasting so bad? Are they not trained? Are they trying too hard? This makes me yearn for Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver.

I'd say it's ok to get thrown out trying to get to second if no one on third and two outs. But yeah was wondering the same about the 6th run.

Nice mullet on Brian Harper!

I mentioned this 10 years ago, but the last three “1” years had all-time great World Series. ‘91 Twins-Braves was probably the best ever, easily the best in my memory. ‘01 D-Backs-Yanks was something special, especially in the shadow of 9/11, and ‘11 Cards-Rangers was a fun one, with an all-time crazy Game Six. Hopefully if it holds we’ll be treated with another barnbutner.

He also, if you combined all his comments, advocated for the Yankees going forward with a Core 3 of Judge, Rizzo and "future closer" Loaisiga (who then threw 8 straight balls in one of the highest pressure moments of his career (he turns 27 during the offseason)).

Alex is, I'd say indisputably, one of the absolute smartest baseball game minds of any public figure. He understands and communicates what the players are doing and thinking as well as anyone, but when he starts to do play by play or riff on "the bigger picture" or opine on players its just an absolute mess.

might have to agree to disagree :) as I would actually rather *not* have any name ex-players in the booth. Maybe it adds something...sometimes? Maybe? I'm trying to be nice, I think.

My highly scientific measurements have it as 15-1 annoying/useless comments to "oh that's a good point" over the past ~40 years so I'd love to go full TeamNerd™ for a while.

(and yes, the specifics of their stats can be better but to me that's like nitpicking a guy who whiffs on 3 bad pitches after going 4-5. More of this please!!)

I think you're right more than you're wrong here, but the good ones are really good and add a ton by virtue of having played. Just in NY, Singleton, Cone and Hernandez are all great.

We had the day off for Yom Kippur (I think), so I was able to watch it. I remember the Dent homer being the defining moment long before ESPN was around to hype it.
