When we get back we flick on the Yankees-Os. They show the statue of Jim Palmer, and L-Jam4 is surprised by Palmer’s leg kick.

“Oh, that’s nothing. Let me show you.” So I pull up the Dominican Dandy Juan Marichal himself on Google images.

“Wow!” Then all three of us try to replicate the high leg, to varying degrees.

“Hell of a pitcher. And as Johnny Roseboro can attest, pretty damn intimidating with the bat, too.”

So, long story… I once got to sit with the great Steve Carlton at some sales dinner. I really enjoyed chatting with him, especially after the second or third drink. Greatest of the many things in modern baseball that he bitched about is how young pitchers are essentially forbidden to use much of a leg kick. He said he understood the need to get the ball to the plate quickly when in the stretch, with runners on base, but he was greatly chagrined at how pitchers gave up full-body pitching power in windup by not kicking high and really getting their body into a pitch. Apparently he made himself persona-non-grata at spring training with his non-conforming opinions.

By 1980's logic, Blue Jays reliever Adam Cimber would be an early candidate for the Cy Young award with 3 wins at this point in the season. This could be a season where relievers could put up stupid win totals. Due to there being such a short spring, and the fact that few teams have 3 guys who can consistently throw 5 innings there's more opportunity than ever for that one inning guy to get the a win.

I want to see a 20 game winner from a reliever.

The record is 18. Roy Face was 18-1 in 1959!

Most wins in relief, one season

18 - Roy Face, Pittsburgh, 1959

17 - John Hiller, Detroit, 1974

17 - Bill Campbell, Minnesota, 1976

16 - Dick Radatz, Boston, 1964

16 - Ron Perranoski, Los Angeles (NL), 1963

16 - Jim Konstanty, Philadelphia (NL), 1950

16 - Tom Johnson, Minnesota, 1977

Reds now have the pitcher Sanmartin batting 5th and lead off in the 2nd inning. Can't get any worse.

Since Phil Castellini told fans “be careful what you ask for” on Opening Day, the Reds have lost 9 straight games by a combined score of 59-18, they’ve had a lead for 18 pitches, and the team owns the worst record in baseball at 2-11.

Mr. D, you're gonna need to spend some time in the cage if the kiddo is going to beat the shift.

Its funny you say that, because in the background of the video you can see a very handsome 1B coach walking back as she's running to first, and that's because he had just gone to the plate and faced her "towards the field" rather than "directly at him".

It’s him, the Big Hurt, and Edgar as the three best RH hitters* whose entire careers I’ve seen, in some order. Apologies to Albert, Trout, and a whole bunch of other guys I’m not sure how to rank. No apologies to Raffy, because fuck him.

The Dontrelle Willis inclusion-plus-contract-extension part did not help.

With the benefit of hindsight the contract extension probably didn't cost Detroit any years of their contention window nor did it likely affect the current team rebuilding process so in the end it just hastened the price rise for Hot N' Ready pizzas.

I flipped on Sports center last night. I can't recall a time where the hosts were actively attacking an ump/referee. They made a point of talking about how bad he was. Neither team was happy.

Jomboy makes a good point at the end. Why does every ump have to rotate to home plate? Can't they have home plate umps and base umps?
