Oscars 2022

Post by DaveInSeattle »

So....Will Smith just punched Chris Rock, right?

After his 'GI Jane 2' joke...Jada was PISSED...and after the punch/slap, Will was saying 'Keep my wife's name outta your mouth'.

Crazy...

Rock and the Smiths have had a beef for a while. She revealed last year that she has alopecia and finally decided to just shave her head. Rock was asking for this one. There's no way he didn't know about it. Will Smith is going to come out just fine from this.

To be fair, Will Smith was laughing at the joke until he wasn't.

If there's a wing in the Actors' Museum for self-serving "lovey" speeches, that gets a display all of its own.

Will Smith is a dork, Chris Rock is far more likeable but overall I don't really have an issue with The Slap. You don't get to be edgy or personal and then cry when someone reacts, which to Rock's credit he hasn't done.

I mean, he's learned to take the jokes in stride, because that's kinda what you have to do as a celebrity. That's why even the infidelity/open relationship jokes, while maybe cringey, he laughed off, because they brought them on themselves. So you deal. But Will then probably noticed Jada's reaction, realized this is a longstanding thing with them and Rock, and you're dealing with a genetic condition, and you're making a joke at the expense of that?

I think it's pretty safe to say that when a person cracks jokes about things a person has no control over, that person is being an asshole. That's really why in today's world, joking about race/ethnic stereotypes, sexuality/gender, or disabilities means you're probably going on the receiving end of a (justifiable) figurative or literal slap. I'm a Chris Rock fan, and he's probably the top standup over the last 30 years, but if he knew Jada had alopecia, then fuck him, he had it coming.

I can't get too worked up over this because I'm not convinced this wasn't a work. The entire entertainment industry is built on fame; this would get people talking. And I don't even think it landed cleanly. Jimmy Caan is probably appalled by it missing.

And if we're talking about most laughable, Bret Stephens is a good bet on someone who's not necessarily acting in bad faith. If you're including bad-faith actors then the betting lines widen.

The fact that it was a slap and not a punch, certainly lends credence to this hypothesis for me.

It was so weird. I thought it was scripted at first, and it looked like Will Smith was laughing. He was absolutely laughing when Rock first made the joke, then he got the stink eye from Jada and then he was mad. When he was screaming, he looked like he was laughing at first. Whatever, fucking crazy moment. I feel bad for everyone who won awards being overshaddowed by this lunacy, but OTOH, do people even watch the Oscars anymore? I feel like the show has declined in importance and interest over the past 20 years, and with the state of the movie industry during the pandemic, I feel like movie attendance is obviously way down, and streaming shows has drawn away from people watching new movies. So, if this didn't happen and blow up the internet, would there even be much Oscar discussion?

I think it was Conan O'brien saying how prior to the 80s, the biggest movie stars wouldn't go on talk shows or make public appearances. The only time people ever saw them not in character was during the Oscars, and it was a huge deal to see them. Once they started appearing in interviews, it lost some of the magic. And now, they are all guests in hour+ podcasts or hosting their own and talking about their lives in full detail, not to mention posting their lives every day on social media, so seeing them at the Oscars is way less intimate than how we see movie stars every day, so it is meaningless.

There's a long jump from "Your look is reminiscent of a movie where a hot woman was bald" to "haha, you have a disease"

If they have history and you can tell me he's 100% going after her, then fine (but like, "find me after the show and hit me" fine - not "ruin the whole night for everyone" fine).

Not a work. You can tell it was not a work by Rock's looking off-stage just after to see if they want him to push on or go to a break. Clearly not a work.

Also, and not that every joke should be parsed like this and you have to start parsing it like this you probably fucked up, but wasn't Demi Moore's look seen as pretty empowering at the time? I don't know, like I said if Rock knew the whole story and they're already enemies then he's on thin ice but that is, in itself, a harmless line about looking like a famous movie character.

Nobody, at least in that room, would have laughed in the first place if she had gained a ton of weight due to medication or something and he made a Precious joke. There are lines and you deserve to have them pointed out to you in a reasonable way.

This morning I put myself in Will Smith's shoes and tried to feel empathy.

As I've stated before in another thread, my wife was diagnosed with melanoma that spread to her lymph node. She's been undergoing immunotherapy treatment monthly and her last treatment is in a few weeks (Yay!). She hasn't lost her hair and her shitty side effects have been nausea and fatigue.

If a dude cracked a cancer joke at my wife's expense I'd be furious. Especially if the 'joke' was done in bad taste and with ill intent. But since I'm 1) in the military and 2) not rich, I cannot just walk up to said dude and slap the shit out of him in a room full of witnesses because I would get arrested and go to jail.

It seems like this reaction of his is propped up by a level of privilege I would never have and therefore can be seen as a justified way of defending his wife more than anything.

So, if Rock has bad blood with Will/Jada and did this to be an asshole built in public, he's a shithead, but it's absolutely a bigger shithead move to get violent over it.

Assuming we all agree a joke about a dead kid would have justified that level of reaction (and therefore its not "you can't ever slap someone on television"), its really just a debate about which topics are over that line. If Rock isn't close enough to Smith to know a joke about this illness is ok, then I'm good with this being considered over the line.

But Rock isn't the host, he doesn't need to crack jokes, he's just presenting. And he could have made a joke about anyone else in that crowd or he could have just gone up there and said how great documentaries are. So to me, it was targeted.

Yup, and this wasn't a roast, it was an awards ceremony. And while I've seen other people say the same as Johnnie about Smith and the level of privilege it takes to think you can get away with a public assault, it goes both ways. I get that comedians have to push boundaries, but if that's not combined with self-policing you're just being an asshole who might get slapped in the face.

(The only good thing about this, besides "Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on live TV", is that it was two black dudes. Mel Gibson slaps Chris Rock or Will Smith slaps Adam Corolla and we're in a world of shit today.)
