Thanksgiving 2022/2023

Post by rass »

As I ran back towards the center of town this morning, what seemed at first like a backup at one traffic light that was strangely confined to just the right lane gradually (at about 9 min/mile) revealed itself to be a miles long, orderly queue, with the police positioned at particularly busy intersections to keep cross traffic and side streets flowing.

Curiosity overcame any need to maintain pace so I stopped and hopped on FB to figure out what was up. The county is holding a drive-up holiday food distribution this morning, first come first served starting at 8AM, at Kean University on the far side of town, and that 3+ mile backup was people waiting patiently to get in.

My wife has been putting in overtime and early mornings this week helping her town open their “warming center” (can’t call it a shelter) that NJ’s Code Blue law mandates be maintained by towns with a documented homeless population over a certain threshold when the temps drop to freezing.

Appreciate what you got this week.

As for our family, this will be the first time since 2019 that we’ll be spending the holiday with anyone other than just us, in our house. Headed out to the Pittsburgh area to my sister’s place, my parents will be there as well as some extended family. I found a 5K to run on Thu AM. Looking forward to it.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

We are hosting our daughter and her boyfriend, wife’s cousin’s daughter and her wife, the disapproving cousin/mother, my wife’s very religious brother, and my wife’s sister who never stops talking.

What could go wrong? I’ll be the drunk one watching football.

Same situation here. Went to present to a Crisis Intervention Team of a local county police force at a church on Thursday. This a pretty large modern church. Two stories, auditorium, classrooms, etc. The entire auditorium was full of food to be given away this weekend. The amount of food that was there just blew me away and made me glad that I can support my family and help others when I can. The coordinator told me it would all be gone by Monday as they delivered to food banks, shelters, assisted living facilities, half way houses and had a drive up scheduled for today.

I’ve had a shit week (or so I’d thought).

Cannonball Run to AVL currently. First Thanksgiving away from extended family in years (ever?), but lots of the families that we see every summer up there will be in town.

Headed to my sisters new property out in the relative middle of nowhere with a smoked turkey from one of Texas Monthly’s Top 50 bbq joints. Then headed to DFW area for a weekend of Six Flags and the Vandoliers/Joshua Ray Walker show.

Down in Nevada City, CA to visit my GF's father this weekend, and her brother and his wife came up from San Francisco. We made a pretty epic lobster paella last night.

For Thanksgiving we'll be home with my daughters home from Gonzaga and the GF's daughters there as well.

We're doing the usual... Frying up a turkey in the driveway/carport while watching foosball. Hosting about a dozen (when you include our unit of 4), so it's manageable chaos. (Second turkey goes in the oven, ensuring proper gravy and lots of leftovers.)

Then we've got the Black Friday US-ENG game the next day and then The Game on Saturday... My nerves and my liver are going to be tested this week!

We are hosting again, usual crowd. Inlaws, Sister-in-Law and her clan of 5, and her inlaws. My father selfishly decided this weeked to go into the hospital with a gall stone and he is getting his gall bladder removed tomorrow. Looks like I need to add my mother's sweet potato pie to my to-do list, and my FiL won't be getting his apple cider. Thanks Dad!

Going to friends' house. Wife is friends with the wife, one kid in each family is in the same Girl Scout troop, the husband will be at work, and a couple other randos from the hosts, including some extended family members who work in the entertainment industry in LA (effects house, from what I have been led to believe). Hopefully, that last part will make it a little more fun.

Wife and I are going to one of the neighbors…three childless couples in total plus the hosts recovering and former homeless addict. So that could be interesting.

Hot take: I dislike-to-hate every food associated with Thanksgiving. I almost wonder if I have some hidden trauma related to the holiday.
I would like expensive whiskey.
We only have beer & wine...

I'm doing a simple oven-roasted broccoli with bacon sprinkles. I was going to go with Brussels, but my parents are in their 80s, and there's no sense trying to introduce them to new foods. I'll have to make a batch w/o bacon for my brother-in-law, who is Muslim- and Vegetarian-when-the-food-doesn't-look-good.

I won't go that far, but I do hate leftovers. I'm happy we are planning on being out of town this weekend so I don't have to deal with them. I also have to eat the food quickly because a lot of the dishes get room temperature quickly and I don't like that at all.

Open faced turkey sandwiches with gravy and accompanied griddle mashed potato is the 1b to the actual dinner itself.

Seeing some absolutely outrageous comments on here the last 3 or 4 posts.

And I get shit for The Pretenders.
