His wife is Celine Gounder. She's an epidemiologist who has been on the news a ton during COVID. This is awful, awful, awful. No fucking way this was natural càuses.

Met him and Ives Galarcep at the local soccer bar a few years back. USMNT was in town for a match and they were at the bar watching another match the day before (Champions League game maybe?). He was exactly as he seemed on air. Very nice, a little quirky, a little socially awkward.

Very weird. And wow.

Didn’t Grant post once on the Swamp?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Sounds like he was sick and overworked. The World Cup had an even more tight schedule this time. The group stage was 48 games in 13 days. Then right into the 16s, not even 1 days rest. And there's certainly something going around. The entire Canadian crew has the flu.

https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22

My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.

This is incredibly sad, can't think of anyone more influential in growing the game here that wasn't a player or coach.

Agree, feels like losing an acquaintance. All the conspiracy theories online are sounding a little crazy now that I see he was sick and working crazy hours. I mean, maybe, but it sounds more likely l he was sick and pushed himself too hard.

Gutting. Made me feel physically ill when I heard it from Rass at dinner especially when it was thought to be foul play. (was also the booze and whatnot, but still.). His voice is American soccer and it’s gone forever.

I think that’s most likely. But still, it’s really strange for a 47-year-old to die from working himself too hard.

Did he have Covid a few months ago?

It's just a combination of many things. Being far away, jetlag, opposite hours, opposite weather, flu going around and maybe a reaction to foreign medicine. And overworking the marquee tournament of your profession.

It's just a reminder for us not to overwork and take health for granted.

Made the mistake of reading Twitter. Wahl got the COVID booster, so 100% he died as a result of the booster. Liberal cultists are too stupid to realize.

Apparently Canada and Britain are cautioning their citizens returning from Qatar to monitor for symptoms caused from the MERS virus, which causes respiratory problems. Transmission rates are low, but it does kill up to a third of the people who get it. Contact with camels and camel products are common ways it is spread and a lot of the tourists have been taking camel rides and consuming camel products, which are common in Qatar.
