This league has some $ and support, but based on the logos (which you should look at for both levels of the leagues), I am guessing they were designed based upon fiver or the kid of the owner (New Jersey for example).
https://www.majorleaguepickleball.net/

Hard to believe this league looks less professional than Major Arena Soccer League, Professional Box Lacrosse Association, and similar.

That's a clown logo, bro.

So bizarre. Why do they assign cities/states to the teams? None of the players are from those areas and it seems like they play a tour like golf or tennis, not home/away matches like a team sport. Are there owners that drafted the players? Just trying to create a false sense of loyalty to fans' "home teams?"

But it worked so well for the nu-USFL?

I think there is a plan over time to have more traditional city-based leagues, but think World Team Tennis. That league has done both event and city-based models over the years (depending on finances and COVID and leadership view of success).

Even if they never go city-based, it is important to tie to a city. I find it really hard to pick a team to support in traveling leagues (The outdoor pro lacrosse league as an example..I guess I support the team whose coach was my college coach). Most of these niche leagues are trying to figure out if the new TV, event, and player popularity model is better than the traditional city-based fan support.

Been around since 1973. Played in the summer. Billie Jean King is involved. Interesting team scoring model. Have gone to a few Washington Kastle's matches over the years. Small stadium setup, super stars make appearances, aging stars and up and coming players anchor the teams.

Not that I follow it... at all... But the few times I've tuned into a Kastles match, it has been fairly entertaining.

And I agree... I just can't get into the lax league where they travel around and aren't assigned to a city. Looking at rosters and seeing if anyone from Hopkins is on them isn't really compelling enough for me to give a shit.

b.t.w they did rig the teams in the first years to group players and their schools...The Whipsnakes were heavy MD Terps (and red jerseys), the Atlas were the JHU team (baby blue uniforms), and a team that was heavy with Canadians/Box players. But you had to be more than casual to really pick up on that.

The Big3 also has the same challenge. I care more about teams from "The Tournament" than any of these leagues.

If you had purchased a pro e-sports team a few years ago you might have made 20 to 40x on your investment by now.

Yeah, but, like... No one gives a shit about WATCHING pickleball. The brilliance of eSports is that I'm sure many of this board spent time in a dorm room/dingy apt watching other ppl play some kind of video game. It's part of that culture.

I know you were probably not being all that serious, but eSports always seemed logical to me. Not that I watch it, but I get it.

I don't know about his pickleball game, but he sure talks a lot of shit about his golf game being ready. Dude, you can't trash talk the guy who has no expectations. I may throw a tee at him next time.

I've given up trying to figure out what people watch and why. I guess I've just gotten too old. There shouldn't be a market for crap like the Kardashian shows and the 101 ripoffs of it, but that crap makes billions of dollars.

If TV can make fifth division English football popular, or people driving around in supercharged go-karts, then I believe it can do the same for pickleball.

To this point, I've been mesmerized by some of the rallies that go viral and show up on whatever platform I'm watching while I take a dump.

I also will stop and watch Cornhole (not related to the above activity) and Spikeball when they show up on the Ocho, so... I'm a mark.

At the bar today they had ESPN2 on and it was playing some doubles pickleball. It's seriously the rich white people-est shit I've seen in quite some time.

There were a couple Asians here and there, but the rest of the people clearly looked like they vote Republican.

As for the gameplay? Short bus tennis. Not compelling at all.

The daughter of a neighbor is a nurse, and she says the Urgent Care facilities can count on numerous old folks coming in every weekend morning, due to mild pickleball-related injuries.
