Because, earthquakes happen on the regular and what not.

And the one in Turkey/Syria today was pretty terrible.

It’s always pretty fucked up to see which countries “matter” here when this sort of thing happens and which don’t as much.

An earthquake for me would definitely be the scariest possible natural disaster because one thing I always would just take for granted, that the ground is stable, suddenly isn't.

that was not expected.
Apparently the USGS ultimately gave Max’s quake a 3.8. That means the one that hit Turkey was 10000 times as strong. Holy shit.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

They've recorded over 60 aftershocks, including one over nine hours later that registered a 7.4.

That is really severe, eh?

Obviously, the worst thing about a major earthquake is the loss of life and the suffering related.

But, secondarily, the one thing that could really fuck up the wealth of the Bay Area/Silicon Valley populace would be a major earthquake in one of the population centers. As you know, we are living on the fault line. I’d guess 90% of the people hereabouts who own a house are sitting on some nice equity. But almost nobody buys earthquake insurance because the premiums are so expensive, and the deductibles are so high.

oh no, by "this one" i meant Turkey - i didn't hear about that real one until like an hour later on a tv in the other room talking about deadly earthquake - was momentarily confused as I was like "wtf it's...nothing" and then my realization. just a weird coincidence.

i quickly googled and saw footage of an aftershock destroying a building with ppl running in the street - gave me some serious 9/11 flashback, I had to shut that down.

In case this was for me, I meant the US. How there's a hierarchy of countries, some where mid-tier news can be the focus of entire days or longer and some where an earthquake that kills more than 9/11 is mentioned alongside domestic non-stories.

They're trying to sell advertising and subscriptions so not sure where information equity falls into that but it's definitely below profits. If the country is of interest to your market then you highlight more. If not less. Kinda end of story.

Fwiw I'd rather an earthquake than landslide. That video from Peru looks bad. Might find a crevice in the rubble. None in the dirt. Just packed up and ready for a ceremony

It was pretty short so it was only 4.0. But it was near the SFO airport, only 15 miles away, so I bet the concourses are buzzing about it!

I was curious and the strong one we had was an 6.5 but was centered 200 miles away.

Looked like a scene in a monster movie, where you know something horrible is around the corner, and it's scariest seeing others react before you see it. What freaks me the fuck out is seeing all the boulders falling and knowing you will either live or die based on whether you move or stay put, and you have no way of guessing which is better.

Full gas reverse after the big one. I'd like to think id focus on the rear view mirror but unlikely. Full gas. Id probably plow into someone behind me or drive off the road.
