Yeah, that big thing was one of the first times I really felt like I was watching a video game. To this point, the show has done a good job making it all seem very plausible. I'm not sure what the explanation will be for that.

I'm still loving this show, but the last 2 episodes haven't been as good as the first 3. Pretty hard to keep up that level though.

Also, I'm considering buying whatever game system this game is on, buying the game, and playing the shit out of it.

Yo tambien. But I'm gonna let S1 end, then go figure it out.

It's not this show's fault, but another show we love watching killed off a character and then we watched this last night. Fucking brutal is right.

Agree on episode 3, all the love it got here and from real life friends got me to watch the show. I love how in any other show, they would have gone to the house and maybe eluded to the guy(s) who lived there and happened just recently died. Maybe a 5 minute scene on how they found the house, maybe not even. Instead, they bust out a beautiful 50 minute love story of two guys finding each other in a post-apocalyptical world and growing old together. Just incredible. That episode was almost a movie!

(And what's cool (to me) is that apparently in the game, it's a lot closer to what you thought it would be. In fact, I read that in the game it's more of a passing comment. To take that and craft Ep3 is pretty incredible.)

There have been liberties taken with character development, but they've been good. The cutscneses in the game aren't as long on exposition, obviously, but they pick and choose from parts that support the narrative at hand, so the development is still there in the game, just maybe not at the exact same times.

And the neighborhood in the show looked almost identical to the game. I told my son what Joel was about to do when they first got pinned down. It was a bit more intense at first but the set design was perfect.

That whole video compares, but might hurt your playing experience if you watch. Not much, though, because there is more to the game action before joel makes it to the house.

The postscript after the show gets into where they expand on the script and where they're true to it. Pretty sure the Bill and Frank stuff in the game is a little different. Maybe a swamper posted specifics? There's also an HBO podcast from the two showrunners that's pretty good.

The podcast and postscripts are different in that they don't seem to be super concerned about spoiling things. Almost like they assume you've played the game and know how it all goes.

The comparison videos are very cool. Now I'm curious about the game play, are these scenes they show kind of like expository scenes between playing the game, or is it more of a story and you choose which actions to take?

It's a pretty strict "guardrails game". That means there is one main path and you go in order. You can do exploring and pick up gear/fight bad guys but they're still mostly tied to the main path. It's not a "side mission" game except where those side missions support the main arc. It's not open world where you just decide where to go and what to get into (Red Dead Redemption, God of War, Elden Ring, too many others to list) so those cutscenes (the expository scene you mention) drive the main plot along. You can't really decide to be "good" or "bad" or go off course very much at all. There are some areas that aren't vital to the main story that let you pick up loot (ammo, health kits, etc.) but really they're just mini stages to the next main event.

And some of the scenes in that video are gameplay (where joel is shooting the gun like a sniper) and not just cutscenes.

I'm just realizing I have no concept of modern video games. Last game I played was Grand Theft Auto Vice City, had to be around 2004, in the brief period between my roommate getting engaged and moving out and subletting to a rando and me getting engaged. Nice guy, had a Playstation whatever number they were up to. Good reminder of why I shouldn't own a video game system, the hours fly buy trying to complete a tricky task. I still have my Atari 2600 in a box in my basement and an old cathode ray tube TV I kept just for that one day when I finally set up the Atari.

I'm thinking it's not going to be a crazy resource-heavy game, and you could probably run it on a not that great rig.

That’s really fucking cool. Sad that I just assumed all those shots of Calgary were Kansas City, but they call it flyover country for a reason, right? Not a good ad for the Nanton tourist board when your town passes for a post apocalyptic hellscape.

I asked my wife how many more episodes in the season, cause that'd be a fuck you season finale.

And that's typical of CSU fucks (ECU is supposedly CSU though I think the only hospital there is for cows.)

Yeah, my brain cramped at them calling it ECU, but that it was right off of 25. I said to my wife that they must be doing something with with a mind-meld with CSU and then the first thing they show is the ram mascot.

I wonder what the rationale is for that? I'm sure they have one.

I looked at the "Last of Us" Wiki (https://thelastofus.fandom.com/wiki/The_Last_of_Us_Wiki) and it was called ECU in the game...I'm assuming because they couldn't get the licensing rights. So they probably just decided to stick with it.

While watching on Sunday night, I did say "Eastern Colorado? I'm pretty sure there's not an Eastern Colorado".

First off, yes, I just read something about that. ECU in the game = consistency in the show. Makes sense.

That said, the reason I was hung up on the "Eastern Colorado" thing is that 1) I-25 is right off the Rockies and runs through Ft. Collins-Denver-Co. Springs. 2) Having made the drive out there and back in recent months, I was acutely aware of the fact that "Eastern Colorado" is nothing but prairie for hundreds and hundreds of square miles. Heck, the minute you drive east out of Denver... nothing but prairie.

ETA - And I guess I'm not in the right spots (reddit) to see if there's any criticism, but folks were pretty worked up about the "mountains" and terrain 40 miles west of Boston. This is just as "egregious" in terms existing landmarks, landscapes and highway placement... If not moreso, given millions of Americans know where I-25 runs.
