The East Palestine, Ohio thing

Anyone got a better handle on that than I do? (and I don't have much) - little media coverage, reports of reporters being arrested who are trying to cover it - dead chickens - toxic plume from trail derailment - etc. A lot there that seems noteworthy/bad but relatively little heat around it...

Definitely a story that I’ve been aware of on the periphery of Twitter but hadn’t paid too much attention to other than the reporter being arrested the other day. Some of the photos are just otherworldly.

Isn’t this the cover story they used in Close Encounters to clear everyone out so they could meet the aliens in secret?

Maybe he’s not seeing it because he’s in the east of France? (Or Czechia or wherever he’s been tweeting from lately.)

With the amount of 'current event' sources I'm plugged into daily I only heard of this yesterday in a group chat I'm in with friends.

Hell even the 'Out of The Loop' subreddit thread, only started 11 hours ago, has 6 comments and seems to be 'Out of The Loop' itself.

Here's the most complete answer from that:

The best thread on Reddit seems to be this one:

Basically nothing when you look at the scale and severity of what happened and how quickly things with outcomes like this go viral.

When people talk about American "FREEDOM!", this is pretty much the only type of unique freedom that the US truly offers and it's the freedom for giant corps to poison your family.

Yep. Today’s GOP would freak the fuck out and create a culture war over the fascist Dems trying to take their lead paint, asbestos and flammable rivers.

And other than this thread, I hadn’t heard about this story, which is crazy.

Sorry guys. Was living my best life in the alps the past few days.

God knows what was on the rail cars, and im not sure we’ve heard what they were moving. Just note that most of the nastiest shit that gets moved around the country does so by rail. Liability on the highway is significantly higher.

Ok, so vinyl chloride gas is heavier than air. Which means it will mostly stay along the ground and could settle in pockets if undisturbed. Like in basements or cellars where there’s no wind. And if it was coming out and not getting combusted from the fire could have settled anywhere downwind. Description of it says it smells pleasant as well, so it’s entirely possible that lets are smelling out dense pockets of stuff and getting higher exposures. Phosgene gas is also nasty, and they would have been generating a lot. Also heavier than air, so same things apply.

Other thing that happens with denser than air gasses is asphyxiation. If the gasses collect in a low lying spot, one might not know they got into a concentrated area then be unable to breathe and get out. That’s the really dangerous part in industry anymore. No one in that immediate area needs to be going into a basement without an air monitor for a bit.

One other point, phosgene was legit used in some of the gas weapons in ww1. So the fact they were burning the original stuff to make phosgene should be all you need to know. Now phosgene is not like the mustard gas or chlorine they were using to kill in ww1, nowhere near as lethal. But still.

All the Ohio small towns that have the same name as a city/country elsewhere on the planet all pronounce them in a different fashion, except for Peru. For example, Lima is "LIE-mah".

Yeah, a lot of Ohio towns aren't pronounced like you think. Lima is a good example. Others:

Lancaster is pronounced like "LANK-es-ter".

Ironton is pronounced like "ARN-ton".

Russia (a small town outside of Dayton) is pronounced like "Roo-SHEE". Supposedly it was pronounced like you would expect but intentionally changed the pronunciation during the Cold War.

The dumbest one is Newark, which some people pronounce like "Nerk".

Wait...how am I supposed to pronounce Berlin? Is it the second syllable that's off? Inverted emphasis?

Lebanin, Lank-a-stir and Ver-sales are all on kentucky's list.
