2023 Swamp NHL Playoff Pool

Post by travzilla »

Back after a one year hiatus... Travzilla's NHL Playoff Pool

(Chedda also has a $$$ pool available to enter... see this thread)

A reminder of the rules:

- Players are ranked by regular-season Points Per Game, then divided into 10 groups. Each group has a different "multiplier" to alter the value of the goals and assists those players score in the playoffs. This levels the playing field between the very best players (group 1) through to the depth guys (group 10).
-For example: Connor McDavid (group 1) gets 1 point per goal/assist, while Brent Burns (group 8) earns 2.4 points per goal/assist.

- There is also a TEAM group where you select 2 teams, which also earn points (3 for a win, -1 for a loss)

- Overtime goals are worth double points

- Between round 2 and 3, you can drop up to 2 eliminated players for 2 new ones.

TO ENTER:

Select 14 PLAYERS (with a maximum of 3 from any single NHL team), and 2 TEAMS from the list below.
**note: you don't need to pick one player from each group, the groups only exist to level out the points value**

Image

Send picks by PM here, or email - travzilla3000 <at> hotmail.com

I'll set the deadline at WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19th at 6:00 pm EST. (after the game 1's but hopefully long enough that everyone who wants in gets a chance to see the thread).

Entry sent! (Btw, Trav, I don't see Jack Hughes in your groups. Seems like a bit of an oversight.)

I think we know who's the favorite in the "visually impaired" division.

Hope it's getting better quickly, sancarlos.

If we weren't playing for such high stakes, I'd say let BSF21 in with his points starting to count tonight.

Honestly I looked at it yesterday and just didn't have the time to put anything together. I'll be content to watch from afar this time.

So I went ahead and drafted BSF a team using a random number generator and it turned out... pretty damn decent? Puts him in 3rd place at the moment.

I kind of like the idea of having a random baseline to measure our own (in)competence against. We can see who has a positive or negative swampWAR in the end.

A scoring thought for next year. Bonus points if after round 2 none of your players or teams are out.

If none of your team is eliminated after round 2, you're probably gonna run away with the thing with or without bonus points. our TV rights holders will be demanding some kind of competitive balance.

I hadn't really fleshed out the idea fully, but what if you've got someone like Fox or Marner and they keep up their 3PPG average, but lose in game 7 of the second round. Doesn't seem "fair" to someone who had all of his players advance to Rd3 for someone who is leading in points, but has now lost Fox and Marner (with 42 points each) and can easily replace them with Heiskanen and Hintz, both averaging 2.5PPG.

I could be way off here, but was just thinking about it, and certainly not advocating for it.

Ah I see what you are talking about, with the player replacement part. Could be something there worth exploring, like maybe getting the new players after rd 2 isn't completely free, but has some penalty or cost to it.

In addition to last nights points, there were also adjustments to previous points due to me missing Oilers game 1 points and Knights game 2 points somehow. Went through all skaters, should be all accurate now.

crazy/stupid follow-up: maybe rather instead of a penalty for the new draftees you could have something like for every round your player plays in they get extra value? I'm not wording it well (it's the vermouth) but e.g. for every round they advance they get an extra multiplier, like adding an extra ~.5 per point. So in this case if McDavid gets to the semis and you drafted him off the hop he's now worth 2.0 per point in that round, but if you just picked him up in the final 4 he's just worth the original 1.0

(it'd be a lot of work tho. I'd throw in an entry fee with a percentage going to Trav ;))
