So which Republican chucklefuck drops first to endorse Trump?

I'll go Nikki Haley so she can try to get that coveted Veep spot that'll probably go to Scary Keri Lake.

It’s fucking dumb that I’m (we’re?) in the uncomfortable position of hoping Trump stays alive long enough to take the GOP nomination.

Feels like the worst case is his shitty ass dying and letting a fascist knob like DeSantis win the nomination.

I think the best case scenario would be Trump pounding DeSantis into the dirt, and then getting a heart attack and dying, or getting a felony conviction and having it ruin him.

He needs to convince a very small percentage of people in a few states that they’re worse off now than four years ago. Trouncing someone equally (but differently) awful like DeSantis will only make him more palatable.

Yeah, he has a solid 35% that love him. Biden has almost zero love, a small group of like and just hoping he doesn’t lose too many Trump haters through being a doddering old man who was an epic gaffe machine at his best. I think Trump can beat Biden.

Something to (not) look forward to...

Autism Advocates Are Dreading a Campaign Season of Insinuations About Ron DeSantis
The attempt to draw attention to DeSantis’ awkward public presence by claiming that the GOP presidential hopeful is “a little bit on the spectrum,” as Trump hatchet man Steve Bannon first put it last week.

It’s not that Benham thinks such a diagnosis would be disqualifying. Rather, she’s troubled by the act of armchair diagnosis as a way of knocking someone. The implication is that the status of being on the spectrum is problematic or shameful or bad — and, at any rate, something intentionally kept secret.

“It’s frankly none of our business until he tells us one way or the other,” she tells me. “But if you want to delegitimize someone as a politician, certainly leaning into those stereotypes that people have about autistic folks is one way to do it. And that’s what’s happening here.”

No kidding. In short order, Bannon’s comment, which used the pseudo-diagnosis to explain DeSantis’ disastrous Twitter campaign rollout alongside Elon Musk, was echoed across the MAGA ecosystem. “Ron DeSantis is 100% on the spectrum,” tweeted the pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer. “Can we finally talk about this?” Grace Chong, the CFO of Bannon’s War Room podcast, called him “DeSpectrum” in one tweet, and in another one contrasted him unfavorably with the former president: “Trump does it BIGGER, BETTER, and with HEART. Unlike that guy on the spectrum.”

How many cliches can fit into one 2 1/2 minute video? All of them...

I love how he talks about Lincoln...and especially Reagan...and never once mentions (or shows) who he was Vice President for.

And newsflash: Reagan hasn't been President in almost 35 years. Most voters have no memory of him.

I didn't watch it because I have better shit to do than listen to the political version of mayonnaise, but can I be sure that they didn't include GOP President Ulysses Grant?

I think that's so funny that the GOP does that. The greatest military general in American history (adjusting for era) and as President he fought the Klan tooth and nail, yet they never include him because they don't want to piss off the South. And then they claim the Southern Strategy never happened.

Shitbags.

I'm wiling to defer to people who know the history more thoroughly (GPJ is the obvious choice). But from what I can gather from my knowledge (a history podcast here, a History Channel documentary there), is that Grant wasn't directly involved in the numerous scandals that were under his administration, but merely that he didn't have proper oversight. That doesn't absolve him -- anything bad that happens with your underlings on your watch is the responsibility of the boss, especially those that occur directly from lack sufficient attention -- but his individual integrity seems to be safe.

Grant was in a tough situation (following a dipshit like Johnson in that climate is a rough draw) and overall I'm a fan.

Regarding the corruption stuff though, he strikes me as a bit of a Nathaniel Hackett type. Like yeah maybe you aren't involved in it but you're the President, man. Tell your boys to chill out.

Teddy is wayyyy too big government for the GOP. You can argue he even surpassed FDR when adjusting for era. He wanted to control everything.

Of course I guess in a lot of ways Trump is just like, an incredibly dumb version of Teddy.

It's really stark how good Lincoln was, especially the two guys previously were Pierce, who never recovered from losing his son and was a complete drunk, and do-absolutely-nothing Buchanan, and then was followed by Johnson who actively sabotaged Lincoln's work. Like a sandwich of sliced Chateaubriand with stale, mold-laden bread.

I'm sure you know way more about this than I do. I'm curious why the GOP would not want Wilson today. He was racist, he invaded Mexico, and he got the US in a war on the same side as Russia. (For a few months anyway.)

I listened to Ron DeSantis on Piers Morgan's podcast and I don't see the 'no charisma' criticism. Things I learned about him.

He met his future wife on a driving range.
His wife just survived cancer.
He played in the Little League World Series
He enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Yale/Harvard and after 9/11 and then became their legal advisor.

I mean there are a thousand major bad reasons not to support him and he's really scary but I don't think lack of charisma is one of them. Using no charisma would be looking past the bad stuff. Can't see the forest for the trees. He has a normal guy personality and scarily Floridians love him.

He enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Yale/Harvard and after 9/11 and then became their legal advisor.
"Legal Advisor" meaning he sat there and watched guys getting tortured.

DeSantis’s pivotal service at Guantánamo during a violent year
Ron DeSantis was a 27-year-old Navy lawyer fresh out of Harvard Law School when he arrived in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, amid an escalating crisis at the U.S. military base.

Hundreds of “enemy combatants,” held without charges, had gone on hunger strikes. As pressure grew to end the protests, DeSantis later said, he was part of a team of military lawyers asked what could be done.

“How do I combat this?” a commanding officer asked in 2006, as DeSantis recalled in an interview he gave years later to a local CBS television station.

“Hey, you actually can force-feed,” DeSantis said he responded in his role as a legal adviser. “Here’s what you can do. Here’s kind of the rules for that.”
Former Guantanamo prisoner: Ron DeSantis watched me being tortured
Mansoor Adayfi, a Yemeni citizen who was held for 14 years on the US Naval base in Cuba, told The Independent in an extraordinary interview that he was brutally force-fed by camp staff during a hunger strike in 2006, and that Mr DeSantis was present for at least one of those sessions.

The United Nations has characterised the force-feeding of hunger strikers at Guantanamo Bay as torture. The US government has denied that the practice amounts to torture, and it has been used against prisoners over successive administrations during hunger strikes.

Mr DeSantis was stationed on the base between March 2006 and January 2007, according to his military records.
