This is ugly

All-time terrible trade. Yotes got the Dylan Guenther pick AND a pick they flipped to Minnesota for Jack McBain, a pretty good young centre, in that deal.

Horrible contract from Benning. I think that franchise is continually fucked as long as they have these owners though.

I’ll be fascinated to see what VGK does with Hill. He became a cult hero in the last six weeks. I know he wants to stay but some team might overpay in UFA.

ETA: Then there’s what if Hill does take a home team discount thanks to the competitiveness and tax situation, you still have Lehner and Thompson under contract. Stashing Thompson in Henderson would be a dick move but is an option I think. Best case for VGK honestly is if Lehner’s career is done after the hip surgery. Stash him on LTIR for 2 years or flip him to a team than needs LTIR money on the books.

Maybe they buy out Lehner? (Not sure of the cap implications). It appears that the timing of Lehner’s return is still up in the air.

Related:
Timeline of a Sharks’ clusterfuck.
1. Sharks make 2022 trade deadline deal with the Wild to acquire G Kappo Kahkonen for D Jake Middleton.
2. Sharks have 3 goalies now, so trade Adin Hill to Vegas for a 4th.
3. Kahkonen is statistically one of worst goalies in NHL in 2022-2023. Holdover James Reimer, too.
Middleton joins top D pairing in Minnesota.
Hill wins Cup in Vegas.

Definitely an option. Lehner has 2 yes at $5AAV left and even if the cap is flat this year should go up about $3M in 2 years but everything I’ve seen is it’s not a done deal he ever plays again.

Would be a funny fuck you to Hellebuyck to trade him to about the only place colder than Winnipeg.

(And yes I know even if he doesn’t have a NMC he’s probably not going anywhere where we would possibly want to sign an extension)

I feel bad for Chelvedayoff. Having to likely deal Wheeler, Dubois and Hellebuyck is gonna be rough

I have a sneaking suspicion the VGK are going to buyout Lehner which should give just enough cap space to re-sign Hill and Barbashev

ETA: That assumes information that only McCrimmon and GMGM have. If they can stash Lehner on LTIR for another season they don’t need to do the buyout. But my strong suspicion is they want to go into next season with Hill (47 starts) and Thompson (35 starts)

Hill is likely passing up more money (overall) and longer term but betting that another big contract might come later (and maybe not wrong with the cap likely to go up more after this year)

Think you’re likely to see a lot of 1 and 2 year deals this off-season.

Yeah, with the cap relatively flat this year and looking to jump in the next off-season and beyond, you'd be somewhat dumb to sign long term right now.

Eh. Maybe I’ll look dumb for saying this but I’d think Adin Hill should take every year he’s been offered right now.

Probably, but the VGK D isn’t going anywhere for the next two years. I don’t buy that his performance was based solely on that but Cassidy’s system and the VGK D is setup to make things easier on goalies. Hill will only be 29 (I believe) in two years and could easily get a six-year deal in 2025 (hopefully not from VGK at that point) if he doesn’t shit himself.

An interesting guy to watch in FA to me is Pacioretty.

Because he’s 35 and because of his LTIR time last two seasons he’s eligible for an incentive-laden contract and incentives hit only like 50 or 66 percent (?) against the cap for players in his FA tier so wouldn’t be surprised if any number of contenders consider him and he’d be easy to fit in even to a cap-strapped team.

Kind weird how Columbus continues to gobble up Michigan Men... Fantilli and Brindley to the BJs.

FantilIi was a no-brainer for them. After Anaheim passed on him at #2, I got excited thinking maybe the Sharks could get him at #4. Oh, well.

Speaking of former Michigan men, I expect 2022 2nd rounder Thomas Bordeleau to be on a top-six forward line this season for the Sharks.

No way more than that but before the 1990s it was essentially nil (no pun intended if you’re an Ilitch stan which is the most common female surname on The Cup

NHL off-season really is sleepy compared to other sports. Those execs and players who spend all summer in Canada cottage country have the right idea.

Anyway Galenchuk getting a DUI, using racial slurs and threatening to kill cops is a four-quadrant lesson in how to get fired

The last team to win the Western Conference two seasons in a row is no longer in the Western Conference (Detroit, 08/09) so which current Western Conference team is the most recent to win the conference two years in a row and bonus “points” for the seasons?

Man, the Sharks had a great 20-year run, but they only made the Cup Final once.
