2023 World Cup

Post by A_B »

Defector running previews just like they did for the men last year. Pretty interesting.

I will be wearing my Rapinoe shirtsey to work on game days but I may need another one for variety. Who's the swamp pick? Leaning Ertz, but I can be persuaded otherwise.

Trinity?

Good call on the Rapinoe. I've got a Pride colored numbers and letters jersey with "Rapinoe 15". Definitely breaking that out soon.

Maybe I should dye my hair blue like Megan and a certain avatar too.

Now that Press is gone, it would be Lavelle for me.

Mallory Swanson (nee Pugh) has long been my favorite player. She is the most similar in style to my daughter, and she seems like such a cool person in interviews and videos. Really bummed when she got hurt. Lavelle is probably next on my list.

From a personal standpoint, we are huge Casey Murphy fans. I'm sure I've mentioned, but we went to a bunch of her games when she played at Rutgers, and about 8 years ago, the week after we saw her eliminated from the NCAA bracket semifinals, she showed up as a coach at the soccer clinic my daughter was doing at the time (guy who ran it was her travel team coach before she moved to PDA). She was so good with the kids, and incredibly friendly. She got her first call up to the U-20 National Team a few days after the picture below. She posted on social media a picture of Carly Lloyd warming her up before practice, my wife commented that my daughter missed her at the clinic, and she followed my wife on several social media platforms, wrote her a nice note, then her mother and brother followed my wife and her mother even wrote a nice note. Casey played every game in the U-20 World Cup that year. Been fun following her career since then.

That's really cool, Syb.

Is Alex Morgan still on the national team? She's my pick. Purely because she went to Cal, of course.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Maybe because it didn't exist when we were kids? At our first Rutgers game, my daughter decided she was going to be a goalie just from watching Casey's warmup, and her friend started playing with her sleeves rolled up because Rutger's best defender did it. It was obvious during warmups, even to a 7 yo, Casey was a special talent. Next morning we were in the front yard doing the same warmup drills and I was shocked how closely my daughter watched. She mimicked all the movements and footwork. Fortunately the goalie idea faded, as she is 5'4" and I don't expect much more height out of her.

The cutest thing about it was Casey's reaction. First day she showed up, our daughters ran off the field saying it was the Rutgers goalie. The head guy overheard and told us all about how he coached her, and she likes to come back and train kids. The other girl's parents brought a sharpie and 2 pieces of paper the next week. Casey looked like she was about to cry, and was so excited they recognized her and wanted her autograph. She was 19 and either a freshman or a sophomore, so probably not getting stopped for autographs too often. Huge inspiration for my daughter to get to watch her at the U-20s 6 months later, then see her go pro and play for the national team.

I hope Vietnam can keep it below 10. They just held Germany to 2 goals in a friendly.

I watched highlights of their recent friendly with NZ... The US game is going to be very ugly. They simply can't slow down attacking players and their marking in the final third was really really poor.

I watched a good chunk of the send off game. Beyond Rose and Trinity, my new player to watch is Alyssa Thompson. She's an 18 yo phenom who loves to drive the ball at defenders and with just a little more polish she could be a game changer.

Yup. I watched the Vietnamese feed and at one point even the announcer said, "If you think this attack is bad, the US and Netherlands is going to be hell."

And this is the best team Vietnam's ever had, 8 years in the making after the debacle in 2015. All players pretty much have played together 8 years and in their prime. The coach is happy they are playing US and Netherlands because as he put it "even if we payed them millions of dollars, they would never play us. It's the only way to improve". The goal is to score one goal in the tournament, and maybe even squeak out a draw against Portugal.

I can see them scoring a goal, for sure. They have a really pacy player on the left flank. Mess around and leave her open and she'll torch anyone.

Yup, that's #19 Thanh Nha, the youngster on the left.

That's risky. There's going to be a draw in there somewhere.

You'd get the same odds taking USA -5, which would be the better bet I think.

US also plays up north which is warmer.

Zambia-Japan and Netherlands-Portugal will be south in Dunedin at night. That's going to be cold, in the 30s.

Wanted some motivation to pay attention to early games. There are some crazy odds on these games. Figured $2 was a fair price for that..plus basically just dumping my Mexico to win gold cup in regular time (thank you 88th minutes winner) and over 1 goal winnings in from last night.

Made some futures bets

Canada to win Group B +200
France to make the semifinals +150
US to scores 20 goals or more +130
Tournament over 217.5 goals +150

I think it will be a high scoring tournament with the expanded field. Will look at game by game but that's harder.

Are you guys interested I can set up a little betting competition. Give each person 100 swampbucks.

There's been a penalty in every game and some decisions very marginal. The one against the Philippines was insane. I would be continually pumping balls into the box looking for mistakes. Any little hand or contact VAR thinks it's a penalty.

Great play quickly swatting away the rebound. If she was slightly later could be another penalty.

Good play especially the rebound but no way that ball is more than 5 feet off her left leg. Cant all be perfect and better there than off a post but man. Not real good. Theres a third of the goal mouth between the ball and post. Watched the first 5 mins and skill level was not high. Maybe they settled in. 0-0 says no.

That was a very poor PK, agreed. The goalie didn't really get much push, she just didn't have to do much to get there.

Sinclair is a power player and she tried to use that to fool the goalie (power players tend to go across their body, so a righty is going to shoot at the left post.) She pushed it and didn't have enough conviction, was hoping the GK would guess wrong.

She has passed up a lot of PKs in past tournies... She's one of the best players in CAN history... It's just in her head.

=-=-=-=-=

degen - Agreed on that PK call against the Philippines... Weak ass call.
