Yeah that’s about it. I’m full of rage this 4th and want it all to burn after multiple public executions.

We watched Wimbledon all morning and decided to follow that up with “The Queen” starring Dame Helen. Maybe gonna fuck around and make Coronation Chicken for dinner, innit.

A proper lad.

I’ve decided the only time I don’t actively dislike this country is when the national team is playing, at which point I turn into a red white and blue freak.

Isn't that the craziest thing?

Not just a USA phenomenon - think of the women who are beaten and harassed by their government, but who will still risk jail time to sneak in and watch the Iranian soccer team.

I don't hate ketchup as part of a medley on my burger (mayo + mustard)... And I use it as the base for my home made smashburger sauce.

But on a hotdog, alone?

What are you 4 years old?

Add in raw onions and that would be my ideal, too.

I just poked through the old skool swamps and found a condiment thread, but not the condiment thread.

I had family members who did that growing up (just dumped on the plate next to some scrambled eggs) which I never got, but salt/pepper/ketchup is assumed at a lot of NJ breakfast places if you order an egg sandwich and I've grown to dig the tanginess it adds.

I've learned to order my Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese with salt and pepper, no ketchup. Ruining a perfect sandwich with ketchup is a damned shame.

Ketchup on everything else.

Onions and brown mustard on a dog is best for me. Sauerkraut, if you cooked it with the dogs, I guess.

while we're on the topic, here's a weird confession - yesterday was the first time in my life i've had relish on a hot dog.

(it was fking awesome, obvs)

usual toppings (i don't eat hotdogs much - have to be grilled for one thing - i don't think i could eat a ballpark dog anymore) for me would be some combination of hot sauce/sriracha, jalepenos, maybe a horseradish mustard (Weber's is the local brand). i guess add relish to that now.

I’m serious about executing ketchup on a hot dog or at least a real beef/pork one but I’ll be a benevolent dictator and let everything else slide.

(Though the correct answer is mustard and onions, chili if you’re in a chili-respectful place, sauerkraut also if in a German-ish place

Blunder went back to it, so let's. How do you guys deal with other people anymore? Frankly, I've collapsed my circle of contact since the pandemic to my family, and really the only other contact with the outside world in any capacity that isn't superficial is here and maybe one or two friends. So I'm admittedly in an echo chamber myself. But what do you guys do?

Like if I was still on social media, I feel like if someone declared that they were a Trump supporter and they were from my part of the country I would just tell them to fuck themselves, in that after January 6 a person can't be a Trump supporter and a supporter of America at the same time. And I get that isn't the most cordial of ways to handling people, but at this point I don't care. I feel like I tried reasoning in good faith, but it's fallen on deaf ears or aggressive ignorance. Telling people to fuck themselves seems like the only way to show them that their views are shit.

I never had a huge circle of friends, and I wish I could do what you suggest but given my location, i'd run out of breath before I got done.

Hot dogs I will eat pretty much anyway except with ketchup. But my favorite is probably just yellow mustard and onions. But then I love a good kraut dog, and relish is great. But hot dogs are one of my comfort foods. There isn't a meaty tube I won't gobble right up.

Don't have a great personal response other than me sadly nodding my head at this post. I also work from home permanently which a) i celebrate every day because my commute time is 30 seconds and has countless other benefits to me / my family ... yet b) if/when i let myself think about it i realize it might be harmful to me in a lot of ways that i'll not come back from. I think that's related to what you're saying because of the timing of everything: the last what, 4 years? have been such a colossal world/country shit-show that I *do* have a lot of trouble connecting with people. I've never been super outgoing but have always been friendly and personable but of late I have extreme tunnel-vision when I'm out and want to interact even less. It's bad.

100% over the past few years I have been / am immediately suspicious of every single person I see, let alone meet - it's very much as if they have to prove themselves to me that they're not a bigot/racist/conspiracyshithead/Bruins fan before I can even give them a chance.

Yeah...it is an echo chamber. And as much as I (we?) try to tell myself I'm just keeping myself to gathering with "good" people there has to be more to it than that - meaning...well, I actually do believe that, as self-righteous and pompous as it is. But perhaps its the very defined separation that perhaps "our" side has started to do that keeps "those others" from interacting with us that keeps accelerating the fuckery. Like really - when's the last time I knowingly had a conversation - not even about politics - with "one of them." - I honestly don't know.

...eh but then again I wish horrible things on these people and don't regret it any more so fuck 'em. Maybe i am the bad guy.

New thread rules:

1. You must make two comments per post.
2. One comment must be positive, one must be negative.
3. One comment must be about America, one must be about hotdogs.

How you combine rules 2 and 3 is up to you.

Inspired in part by S2E7 of The Bear, wife and I are looking at a Labor Day trip to Chicago: Deep Dish, Italian Beef, Chicago-style Hot Dog. I don't care if it's touristy and cheesy.

As a kid, my rather flighty (and sometimes in an awesome way) mother told me to throw some clothes in a backpack and we drove from Ann Arbor to Chicago pretty much to get pizza. We wound up catching a baseball game and going to the science museum and it was an awesome weekend all around.

I feel like I have a pretty big circle of people I hang out with. My wife is a social butterfly and will make friends with anyone. If we're hanging out with a group of people, I will obviously gravitate towards those who I know aren't Trump supporters. I also know how I get when trying to have a discussion with those people and I just don't do it. I'll remove myself from the situation. It is funny to me how they will find any way of bringing it up, even if they don't realize my political leanings. One time a few years ago I remember the dad of one of my daughter's friends asking me if I liked football or played fantasy football. All excited for something to have a connection with this person instead of sitting there making annoying small talk, I enthusiastically said yes. Of course, his response was he doesn't because of how they disrespect the flag, blah, blah, blah. Dude, we're at a Father/Daughter dance what is your problem? I also unfriended a neighbor and will refuse to be around any event he is at after basically calling me a pedophile on Facebook. He got brought up yesterday and I'm pretty sure there will be a confrontation if I see him I'm still so full of rage about it over two months later.

In my closest group of guy friends, we really don't talk about it unless I'm hanging with the guys I know feel the same way. While we do have more conservative-leaning guys in our group, none of them are Trump supporters. Mostly, they don't care and it does get frustrating to me in a way because they don't realize how lucky they have it to be so apathetic about what's going on in this world.

Also, if I can only have one hot dog the rest of my life, it's a chili cheese coney, extra onions.

You guys should NOT be beating yourselves up over this at this point. I run in circles with a decent amount of Republicans... almost exclusively because of $$/taxes and regulatory stuff. Which, you know, it's craven and gross but it's hard to blame dudes that went to Georgetown Prep and then (insert private catholic uni) and their entire world view is shaped by country-club culture and clatter. I'm not close with those folks, but they're in my sphere.

I don't engage with them on anything other than sports and banal shit about their kids.

But these aren't the MAGAheads you're looking for... I have ZERO interaction with those folks. I booted a few early in the Trump presidency and that was that. And I have absolutely no qualms about just ignoring and completely avoiding those types of people. They have literally lost their minds. They are unwitting cultists.

Did you guys see the footage over the weekend of Lindsey fucking Graham getting mercilessly booed in his home county at a Trump rally? These people have lost their fucking minds. Unless you have the patience of a saint, it is truly unhealthy to engage with crazy. I don't say "fuck those people" anymore, I have pity for them. They are absolutely off the rails crazy at this point.

I'd be more inclined to talk to the old school traditional Republicans who stand by the Party despite knowing how crazy it's become. I'd be fascinated to hear how they twist logic to stick with the freak show. I really only knowingly deal with one Trumper that I've mentioned before. His daughter plays basketball on my daughter's team, I coached her in soccer for years... Really nice guy, but not very bright. I remember around 2015 when Trump first started running, he hung around a soccer practice and was saying Trump is unorthodox, but since he is such a business genius, maybe he could fix Washington. Another father went off on him, quite rudely, that Trump is a con artist, terrible businessman, etc... I didn't have to say a word. Cut to 2020, the Trump guy flew is "Trump 2020: No More Bullshit" flag long after 1/6 and Biden's taking office. I just avoid politics, usually talk about our kids' sports. I just pity him. He isn't intelligent enough to see through bullshit and he falls for the tough guy bluster and believes Trump when he says how great he is.

With FoxNews watchers, I just remind myself that they are living in a different reality from us. Their worldview is shaped by lies and they are brainwashed into thinking everything outside the Fox worldview is lies. When you start with that base, I can understand why they think their view is correct. It's their fault for not getting a balance mix of information. As for 1/6, if they truly believe the election was stolen, they are right to believe the rioters were patriots. If Trump legit stole the election, we would be cheering protesters storming the Capitol to prevent the steal. Sure, they are incredibly naive to believe the narrative, but if you put yourself in a bubble with only the RW propaganda, you can see how they believe what they believe. And since we have completely different factual worlds, there is absolutely no point in talking about it, because you can't persuade them with facts, because facts that aren't on FoxNews are LW lies.

Yeah, one dude that used to really want to get into it with me calls himself a moderate because he (claims to) watch both Fox and CNN... to get a balance. This was many years ago, pre-Trump... before stuff just got stupid. He wouldn't hear me when I said both are problematic when they blur the lines between commentary/opinion and just relaying news/facts.

He and his family moved to Nashville, so we have very limited interactions when they come up to visit with our circle of friends. (His wife is a fucking riot and I love hanging out with her. He can actually be pretty fun when he's not trying to get into a "debate" with me.)

I'd be really curious what he says about all of this. Dude is a self-made multi-millionaire (very smart), but how do you sign off on a guy like Trump at this point? My guess is he doesn't, but he's probably still gonna vote for whoever the GOP puts on the ballot.

This post may meander because I feel there's so much to explain, but I don't want to make this a novel. I moved into my new neighborhood a little over a year ago. There are so many families in this place which is great for the kids, but I'm still feeling everybody out. I joined the cornhole league that they started (22 people!) just to try to get to know them better. To trash talk with everyone and set up the schedule, I was added to a WhatsApp text thread. It's not full-blown MAGA, but I can sense the leanings. There's one, maybe two guys that I could see myself hanging out with outside a neighborhood gathering. Monday was the annual block party/pig roast and it's still awkward because a lot of them have known each other for so long. The detective next door flies a Blue Lives Matter flag, two other cops on the street, one that I've seen wear a MAGA hat in the past, two firefighters, a couple guys who work for the government, one of which was wearing a Lions not Sheep shirt at the party, and then the one guy who seems to be trying to make the neighborhood into a cult (flies a flag with a made-up community name with the tagline "A True American Neighborhood"). But there are some genuinely nice guys here and I love the sense of community that I didn't have at my previous residence. I guess we'll see once 2024 rolls around how vocal they really are about everything.

The hot dogs were only for the kids on Monday, because why would you eat a hot dog when they roasted a whole damn pig in the hours leading up to the party. But I did have one on Tuesday, mustard only. I prefer spicy, but they only had yellow. Only other thing I ever put on a dog is chili.
