Immaculate grid

Post by Brontoburglar »

how has this board not gotten in on this or posted about it here?

https://www.immaculategrid.com/

(note: today's is not limited to pitchers, so you don't have to find a pitcher for the middle square)

I just got into this a few days ago and love it. Baseball card collecting in the past helps, quitting fantasy baseball a few years ago does not.

Immaculate Grid 94 7/9:

⬜️🟩⬜️
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩

I don't follow baseball anywhere nearly as closely as I did 20-30 years ago, so Tampa Bay line was going to wreck me.

yup - i've been obsessing over this since i was told about it 3 weeks ago.

i'm just glad there's only 1 per day.

i've got 50 years of knowledge, Statis Pro Baseball game, and Topps cards to go on so I usually get at least 8 but my biggest weaknesses are anything around saves (who gives a shit) and for some reason i have almost no relative knowledge of the Diamondbacks/Marlins/Rays/Rockies - I find I have to get a bit lucky on those. My default for thinking about teams is in the 1978-1986 timeframe and I obviously can't cross anyone to those teams...

Is there a version limited to 1998 or earlier?

ETA: looks like I was overly ambitious with that date. Looked at the hockey one, had to Google the Blue Jackets logo to know what team they were asking. Can’t believe they started in 1997, would have thought I was cognizant of hockey enough then to know the team. Literally can’t name one player that played for the franchise. Late 80s to early 90s, I could have named 15 players on every roster, and probably saw 30% of them play in the minors.

Yeah, this is me too, though maybe ten years earlier. I have no idea who’s been on the Rangers and Marlins or who on the Royals got 40 saves. But give me the NL East of 1977-1984 and I’ll kill it.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

totally struggling w that square today.

also it's funny that i realized i posted i'm weak on the "expansion teams" when they have all been in existence for like 30 years. FFFFFUUUUUUCCCCC....

unfortunately middle relievers are so fungible in mlb and in my brain that they are a great answer for a lot of these that i can't get. i find this is where what exists of my "old school baseball" mentality creeps in ("ahhh it was easier when staffs only had 10 guys on it!")

He died of brain cancer like a lot of guys/dudes who spent their home games on shitty 70s/80s/90s turf, like Johnny Oates, Tug McGraw, Darren Daulton... shit. A lot of Phillies. That Vet turf was a friggin WMD.

My brain is so wired into my baseball card-collecting years (ending in the late 1980's) that it took me almost a week after the fact to remember the Tigers have two guys who played for Philly last year on their roster (well, one got sent down - I answered Lance Parrish). The most recent player I used in one grid was Jack McDowell and I had another one where I remembered "that third baseman who signed a massive extension while still in the minors" for the Rays (six games in MLB, whatever) because I couldn't remember Evan Longoria's name.

I know Quiz. But no idea if he got to 40.

I tried Lee Smith as a 40-save guy for Boston. Nope.

The entire left side of today's grid I picked the "most popular answer" and I was surprised about top left.

I decided to give this a shot, but I had the Rockies, so that column was a waste, as you can't repeat players. If you got extra points for low % answers, I might be competitive. Of my 5 correct answers, 3 were under 10%, one was 19% and the other was 40%. Of the 6 most popular answers who played for 2 teams, I've only heard of 1.

Took a wild ass guess of an obvious Tiger who must have played for other teams and I got it. 9 for 9! What does the rarity score mean?

Got them all for the first time today with a rarity score of 44 (I think less is better) by pulling names like

Phil Garner, Dick Groat, Vida Blue, Jose Cruz Jr (no face), Carl Hubbell, Lefty Grove, Pat Hentgen, and Hal Newhouser.
