NFL 2023 - Week 3
Just to get the Bears discussion in this week's thread.
Williams is the DC (who I think didn't coach game 2?) and reports are he has resigned.

ETA - Oh, sorry, didn't see Mr. D posted.
And, yeah, I was responding to the tweet that said "shocking"... Don't know that person, but given all the zany shit goes on around professional sports, it's gonna need to be something more than, like, drug possession/trafficking or whatever.

And here I thought the biggest Bear news of the week was going to be Justin Fields saying he's playing so horribly bc he's getting too much coaching.

Its also possible, given the mess that twitter is, that nothing has actually happened and he's just resigning, right?Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:28 pmAnd, yeah, I was responding to the tweet that said "shocking"... Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
Not sure where to put this, as it's more of a meta football viewing thing:
I've spent the better part of the last couple of decades being very much a college football fan, with the NFL being a "meh, I'll catch interesting games as they come." So, not as dialed into... COMMERCIALS!
For a long time, I was seeing the amount of commercials being about on par. Both had way too many.
The last few years, watching more NFL and something really struck me this year... Is the NFL running less commercials? The college game is damn near close to unwatchable. But I noticed on Monday for the first time watching those two games... Just a lot less? Maybe because I had multi-view on, so I could toggle?
Anyone else notice this?

Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
I'm sure I'll forget things, but...
The Charles Tillman reference in that tweet is because his post-football career is as an FBI agent.
While Fields took blame in his full comments when he essentially ripped the coaching, he didn't like how things were going after the first press availability and reiterated after practice that he is responsible and has not played his best.
DC Alan Williams didn't coach last week and Matt Eberflus called plays against TB. Williams' statement said he was leaving due to tend to his health and his family (ESPN's beat reporter even reached out to Williams' attorney for comment). The team's statement, in full: "Alan Williams submitted his resignation as the team’s defensive coordinator this afternoon."
They also cut Nathan Peterman yesterday, which I can't help but think was in some way an effort to try to scapegoat an easy target.
I watched JT O'Sullivan's "The QB School" breakdown of Fields against Tampa Bay (he intends it as a quarterback video tutorial). 90+ minutes in which O'Sullivan gets into Fields' issues (slow processing, terrible footwork) and beyond (terrible play design, bad blocking, poor effort from various players - dogging it on routes, etc.). Just an absolute delight.

They re-signed Peterman. What are they doing?

My guess would be quiet tanking.

Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
Todd McNeigh was afraid of the slow processing tanking his NFL career, but he figured that if he can improve it just a bit, he does everything else well enough to succeed. It's not looking like that's going to happen, unfortunately.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 8:57 am

Cant imagine playing nfl qb and not seeing it quickly. Has to be scary as hell in that helmet.
Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
It does seem with Fields that he sees things but he's just too slow to react, which I imagine is something inherent that can't really be improved.
My go-to example of "slow processor" is Trubisky and they just seem like they have different problems.

Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
A little bit of context to the Peterman thing...
Bears signed PJ Walker this offseason with some guaranteed money, the gist being to have a backup who plays a similar style to Fields. They signed a UDFA after the draft (D2 guy with massive stats, but a pocket passer), then Peterman before camp started (he was with them last season).
Fields threw 2 TDs in the first preseason game on short passes with obscene YAC, then held him out of the second game, in part because the offensive line was banged up, and was shaky in their third game. Walker was terrible all preseason, UDFA guy led a couple long TD drives (he, a non-running QB, had both scores on the ground while going 20/29 for 156 and a pick through the air).
They cut Walker and surprisingly kept Peterman, as well as the UDFA guy.
This shift to wanting Fields to be a pocket passer makes me wonder if part of the plan to structure the offense that way allows UDFA guy the best possible base for success in the event they play him (Fields clearly isn't working out in mid-December, gets hurt, whatever). And, now, Fields is chafing against that because it is taking away from what he can do.
But, I can't tell if they're trying to help the backup rookie or stupid when it comes to utilizing Fields or something else. The track record suggests they're not smart enough for this version of 2-D chess.

Re: NFL 2023 - Week 3
Also, regarding the Peterman cut/re-signing... It's being explained as cutting him so they could sign an offensive lineman off someone else's practice squad...which means they did not know who they wanted to sign, but cut him anyway, then brought him back.

Driving past an exit in VA on I-81 on Sunday I saw a Radio Shack in a strip mall right off the highway and just looked it up and it seems to still be operational!

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think they went through the flavor bankruptcy where you don't go out of business, but you sell a bunch of assets of to those you owe money under a structured deal. You come out the other a different company/entity, but you're not dead.

Wow. That's legitimately unreal for how severe that injury looked.

I said in a text group that it was the "cleanest" looking catastrophic injury I can remember, so this is surprising but I'm not tremendously surprised.
