The chase for the last wild card slot in the eastern conf is kind of nuts. 4 teams all within a point of each other (Devils and Sabres are 5 points out of the second slot.)

He got hit with a high stick right in the mouth but dude was swinging at the puck and just slammed the puck into his mouth with his stick. Bleeding too so went from a double minor to no penalty.
Didn't watch but twitter was flipping out that they kept blowing the whistle every time Crosby went down.

I don't follow hockey as much anymore as the rest of you on this thread, but giving up 9 goals is not conducive to winning, even in this day and age, right?

There's still a pretty big auction date to purchase land for a new Arizona arena, no?

Apparently they may not wait.

After two decades of this bullshit you’d think they could wait another two months. I feel bad for Yotes fans and there are a lot more than you’d think. Muerelo might finally be done bleeding money and realizes a team-financed $1 billion arena project isn’t as sweet as a smaller market with an arena in place.

Tell me more about this. Do they have a devoted fan base? I legit don't know either way. I figure they've been in the desert now for (checks hockey reference) 28 years (28 years? How?), so I would figure they have a couple generations worth, but is it, if not a hotbed, than at least a sizable presence?

The problem in Phoenix was always the location of the arena, until they moved. Phoenix has traffic and it was a tough location. Now they play in that tiny facility, but at least they sell it out.

I’m not going to pretend it’s one of the best markets in the country but there’s a definite core of passionate fans that have been shit on forever between horrible management, the ownership turnover and the arena debacle.

A downtown(-ish) arena or something at least fairly central to the valley would probably sellout most games. Phoenix is a popular away fan destination and there are a lot of local fans who would come back if given a decent arena and half-decent product.

That's a pretty good contract for Vegas. The Flames keeping him with that contract would have just been the wrong move. They would have gone nowhere had they extended Hanifin (and the others). The Flames needed to start rebuilding, and thankfully they made that choice.

I’m pretty happy with it. Last year is his age 35 season which isn’t bad for such a big money deal. According to the tax calculator, Calgary would have had to pay him about $8.25M AAV for the same post-tax income so don’t think they were going to give him $66M.

Those Sharks teams with Burns, Karlsson and Vlasic on D were so hilariously incompetent at actual defense but they did ball out on offense.

Burns an Karlsson both essentially played rover. Elite offensively but always an adventure on defense. Vlasic never really filled that mold. He used to be an excellent defender, but he got old overnight, a couple years ago.

Sergachev too, although I think Les Bolts can be forgiven for this one. Double leg break. Also, I haven't heard that he'll be ready for round 1 game 1, but he's been practicing in a non-contact jersey.

ETA - recent Tampa Bay Times article implies 98 won't return in the first round.

The thing is ... its so easy to close. I get you don't want guys who are really injured until that exact day to have to miss the playoffs, so just adjust the rules to say every night of the playoffs, the 20 you dress have to come in under the cap. Don't count the guys in the press box and ignore that the cap is usually applied to up to 23 players. Done.

Hmmm ... not done because that doesn't account for legal backloading of cap hits by teams who save up early. So take your game 82 or post-deadline or whatever nightly hit and you can't go over that bringing a player back. If $5MM comes in, $5MM has to come back out. Now its done.

Vegas still would have been under the cap last year for the entire playoffs with this rule by the way.

Amadio 762,500
Barbashev 2,250,000
Brossoit 2,200,000
Carrier 1,400,000
Eichel 10,000,000
Hague 2,290,000
Howden 1,500,000
Karlsson 5,900,000
Kolesar 1,400,000
Marchessault 5,000,000
Martinez 5,250,000
McNabb 2,850,000
Pietrangelo 8,800,000
Roy 3,000,000
Smith 5,000,000
Stephenson 2,750,000
Stone 9,500,000
Theodore 5,200,000
Whitecloud 2,750,000
Hill 2,175,000

Total 80,327,500
2022-23 NHL Salary Cap 82,500,000

I think most of that Barbashev money was actually retained by STL so even with the three guys in the press box (Kessel, Blueger & Cotter - about 3M combined) they were under.

Holy crap.
This was news a week ago:

Arizona Coyotes release details of proposed entertainment district near Scottsdale
“My family and I are committed to winning this land auction and building a transformative entertainment district that will not require taxpayer funding for the first time in Arizona history,” said Arizona Coyotes Chairman and Governor Alex Meruelo. “We will buy this land, build this development and finish a project that will incur the cost of more than $100 million in infrastructure improvements with no burden placed on taxpayers.”
LOL.

Really interesting game in DC tonight. Nick Jensen gets absolutely hamblasted into the boards by a TBL dude. Jensen is like.. dead? I dunno. coma maybe? After lengthy review... no foul. Which... Huh... Ok. Not losing my mind as it wasn't a straight-up egregious boarding. Still. To some of the points by many on this board for years, dude that committed the foul could've made some different choices.

Anyways, ffwd 10 minutes and Nic Dowd drops gloves with the TBL guy, who takes a mild ass whooping like a man and we all move on. In the penalty box, you can see the Cap (Dowd) say to the other guy.. "nice job... nice job..." and it's not sarcastic, he is legit giving him props for dropping the gloves and lowering the the overall temperature of the situation.

Classic/perfect example of NHL unwritten rules that actually make things better in the game.

Sloppy but not dirty on the hit. They gave him 5 and reviewed before saying no foul. It was also the weird early intermission and add that time to the next period after the scary injury.
