This helmet thing is fascinating to me. 1) the military precision in having the backup helmet ready between plays and 2) the fact that the backup helmet doesn’t fit, despite having months to try it out.

I think the cold played a role in both events

eta: it's uncomfortable as f outside. when the wind isn't howling (not often!) it's normal KC cold. but otherwise, yuck.

I think fans' view of Jason Garrett the analyst would be significantly different if they could separate him as an analyst from Jason Garrett the Cowboys coach

This weekend is working to be a trial run when they expand to a 16 team playoff. They’ll adjust the season so Round 1 (it won’t be the wild card round anymore) will be MLK weekend. They’ll do a triple header on Saturday and Sunday, and then an afternoon and night game on Monday. And have the players put MLK stickers on their helmets.

And obviously I’m going to be disgusted by it, yet go right back to the trough and watch it all. Because I suck.

John Skipper (former ESPN exec) said the Super Bowl would eventually go PPV last year.
“If you just assume that half of the people watched would still figure out a way to watch if it costs $200-$250 for a household, you’re just going to have more of what David said, bigger parties,” Skipper said. “I don’t know how many households, I assume it’s half the households who watched; if it was only a quarter of them are willing to pay $20 to have a party at their house, it would still get you into the billions of dollars for a single game, and that is the single best way I can think of for the NFL to increase their annual revenue take for their clubs, is to make the Super Bowl a Pay-Per-View event.”

the most likely near future scenario seems -- especially with the NFL/ESPN reports -- that ESPN's megacast expands to the Super Bowl and to access the different feeds/channels outside of the main broadcast, you have to subscribe to ESPN+

When has the NFL ever turned down an opportunity to increase revenue, regardless of the health of its players or its enjoyment of its fans?

If they thought they could get away with it, they would have done it already. They’ve had NFL games on stations people have to pay for since 1987.

Maybe they would put the Super Bowl on PPV, maybe they won’t. I wouldn’t put it past them to threaten it to the networks when the next round of tv deals come up for negotiation.

I found a stream last night for the PeAcOcK eXcLuSiVe game and watched it without major issues.

Seeing Kansas City centric commercials was kinda funny. HyVee has the best steaks!

Also, if the Super Bowl ever went PPV the Pentagon would probably step in because AFN is the only way American service members overseas can watch the game. The NFL would probably have an exemption, but still.

I'd wager that the percentage of people who pay for basic cable/satellite tv is way, way higher than the percentage of people who are regular streamers.

Obviously, the price for Peacock is low. So, I think a big chunk of the outrage (besides people just being indignant over the NFL's obvious greed) is over the fact that there is a higher percentage of people than you probably guess (mostly old people) who don't stream, because A) they don't have strong internet, or B) they don't have smart tv's, or C) they are technologically ignorant. Those people are being shut out of enjoying a product they are used to enjoying.

Those are all valid points. This definitely backfired against them. IMO, the backlash to this will make the Suoer Bowl PPV thing less likely.
