Twice named European Footballer of the Year, Beckenbauer appeared 103 times for West Germany, playing in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. He is one of three men, along with Brazil's Mário Zagallo and France's Didier Deschamps, to have won the World Cup as a player and as a manager; he lifted the World Cup trophy as captain in 1974, and repeated the feat as a manager in 1990.[4] He was the first captain to lift the World Cup and European Championship at the international level and the European Cup at the club level. He was named in the World Team of the 20th Century in 1998, the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002, the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020, and in 2004 was listed in the FIFA 100 of the world's greatest living players.[5][6]

Oh, they still are. But back then it was the two of them. And not being able to see their games except in highlights just added to the mystique.

You kind of have to be as old as me to really remember him. Not that I remember him as players so much. What I remember is that an aged Beckenbauer was one of the big names they brought over to the NASL in the 1970s, which got a lot of press at the time.

I'm tb's age, but I grew up watching Soccer Made in Germany so that dude was all over the damn screen for me in the mid-70s.

Also, the shoe. There just weren't a lot of brands and I know those were what I wore those growing up. And I'm pretty sure that line morphed into the Copa Mundial line (referred to me and my peers as simply "Copas") that I wore all the way through college. I was really proud of those cleats. They were expensive (to me), so I really treated them well.

Come on! Der Kaiser! I really thought he was just a drop below Pele on name recognition. I'm too young to remember the NASL, but I read a lot about it, and Pele and Beckenbauer were always named together as the huge names brought in to give the league credibility and draw interest. And like NLFC, Beckenbauer cleats were the pinnacle. I was never lucky enough to own a pair, but they were always the most expensive cleat in the store.

"uninformed" is harsh, makes me sound like a right twat.

I think the Bobby Hull and Maurice Richard comparisons take away from Beckenbauer's defensive ability (although I believe he did begin his career in midfield as an incredibly technical player), from what I have read, Harvey was the true defender who first looked to bring the puck out of defense and be an asset moving forward. Beckenbauer is certainly the player that soccer history looks to when thinking about a defender who initiated attacks and would bring a ball out of defense.

I think that takes away from his defensive ability, from what I have read, Harvey was the true defender who first looked to bring the puck out of defense and be an asset moving forward. Beckenbauer is certainly the player that soccer history looks to when thinking about a defender who initiated attacks and would bring a ball out of defense.

I was just thinking level of fame/talent. In that case, I'd go with Bobby Orr. I was a huge hockey fan from age 5-21, went on annual trips to the Hockey Hall of Fame, read about the history etc... and I just can't recall hearing about Doug Harvey.
