Swamp Travel Guide: Five Pound Basses Take NashVegas

We're going to see American Aquarium and Murder By Death at The Ryman next weekend. I have some decent ideas for non-food (but a lot of alcohol) places, but my friends who recently went don't really care about food. Any recs on good places to eat downtown or anything else you would recommend doing in a 48-hour period (of course, we have the concert and the Texans second-round game already planned)?

When I was down a few years back we did The Pharmacy for bugers and it was better than most. Another place was Von Elrod's by GEODIS Park. In house made sausage and beer garden.

Would’ve guessed you’d prefer your homemade bugers.

Well The Pharmacy has a bacon cheeseburger with Gifford smoked bacon so I think that means we have to eat there.

If you guys are up for super fancy coffee and tea, my friends opened up a spot at the Continental inside the Grand Hyatt at 1000 Broadway called Now and Then. I'm dying to get up there and check it out. It's part of Sean Brock's food empire. I'm pretty sure there's a restaurant there as well, and the spot where they sling coffee is a Japanese style HiFi cocktail bar/listening bar in the evenings. The Black Keys were spinning there the other night. If you go for coffee and tea, make sure to tell Davy and Demi I sent you.

Now and Then doesn't really strike me as a place where two dudes meeting up for a concert would go, but it's just 5 blocks up the road.

Also, I hear East Nashville is the neighborhood you want to hit. My only time in NashVegas was for the Bolts' outdoor game vs. the Preds a few years ago and none of our crew wanted to get out that way. I really did not enjoy Broadway at all.

Was my first Todd snider album I think. It's full of slappers, bangers and certified twangers.

Yeah, the coffee shop is Now and Then, and it's inside the Grand Hyatt Nashville.

Gotcha. I always try to find a new coffee shop wherever I go, so this sounds like a winner.

My one hesitation with recommending this place is that it is going to be the highest end coffee place you've ever been to (and that I would have been to either). They're veteran baristas that moved there from Tampa a little over a year ago. They'd do monthly popups at different spots down here with their "elevated" takes on coffee and tea. Guessing it'll be ~$7-15 per drink, depending on what you choose. They're definitely still spinning records on the HiFi system in the morning, but I think they don't really want/allow anyone to use it as a workspace (i.e. sit on their computer), like most other coffee shops. I suspect you'll love it, but I don't want to send you there with an expectation that it's just a "fill your cup from the 3 gallon drip coffee urn" type spot.

Last year I went to Cali when they had their coldest week in a decade. Now I'm headed to Nashville with one of their worst winter storms. Lexington isn't great right now either.

I think it will be Ok. And yes, anyone who buys a pickup truck without 4wd is a maroon unless you live in a dry climate I guess.
