Yes, the Offseason is over, Spring Training has begun.

(Ok, so this tweet doesn't actually have anything to do with spring training. And may have been posted before for all I know.)

Dave Stieb was really under-appreciated.

Yeah, he had a helluva run from 1982-85 especially.

Good thing we traded for Burnes. Maybe we go out and deal for one more starter? Sign Snell or Montgomery?

Hey it's not all lost. I hear he's going to do injections and not surgery and come back sooner. So instead he'll come back, pitch half an inning and then miss 18 months!

If I’m Elias I see about making an offer for a mid-rotation arm like Michael Lorenzen, then if Bradish can actually be one of those guys who pitch effectively with a partially torn UCL (there are a few of them, but that’s still a big ask), and Means gets back, then consider moving Kremer to the pen as a long arm.

Not a fan of waiting for the trade market to open up during the season. Not when you can go get a mid-rote guy like Lorenzen, Ryu or even Clevinger now and sort it all out later.

I agree. We don't need to jump at a #1. Find another innings eater until you see what pans out with Braddish. I don't want to see Irvin or Zimmerman in our starting rotation.

I'm going to disagree. Assuming the reports are right and the ask on Cease from the Yankees is Spencer Jones, you can absolutely get him with a more painful offer than Burnes but one that doesn't cost the absolute top prospects. Burnes + Cease added to that lineup would be pretty amazing.

Understood. Right player right deal. I just figured the asking price for anyone would go up now that we have more of a need.
I read the Marlins ask for Luzardo was Basallo (now has a stress fracture), a SS (probably Ortiz) and another arm. That was before the Burnes deal and I'm kind of glad they didn't do that deal. Basallo has some silly numbers.

Agreed. I think you do trade him sooner than later because there's not much more hype possible around him, but I think you'd want back "exactly him, but usable" so a young, middle of the lineup OF I guess. So looking at Klaw's list, he's sitting right around Pete Crow-Armstrong, James Wood and Jasson Dominguez. Its probably too much of a challenge trade to happen, but I'm sure one of those teams would rather Basallo than their guy (if there wasn't that massive risk that comes with losing the trade).

Anthony Rendon might shatter the all-time "mistake of being honest" record.

Blake Snell won the Cy Young last year, right? Is there any reason he isn't signed yet?

Boras

Given what he's presumably asking for, there are just too many red flags: Innings, walks, park assistance in SD, already 31, I think he's a weirdo ...

It would definitely be the craziest show-me contract ever, but I also wouldn't want my team committing all that much more? And I think Snell (or atleast Boras) is smart enough to not take that risk? I assume he's going to get 5-6 for a lot less than the 2 Cy Youngs would dictate he should and it'll still end up a bad deal once its complete.

I read awhile back that he really wanted to pitch for Seattle, his hometown team, but they passed.

I think I actually read it in the Swamp, in the Offseason thread. Here it is:
DaveInSeattle on Dec 23 wrote: Wed Dec 06, 2023 1:56 pm The Mariner's have completely shit the bed...again...

After the disastrous Jerry DiPoto interview after the end of the season (the now infamous "54%" one), now they are dumping salaries right and left. Turns out that the RSN (Root Sports NW) is 71% owned by the M's, and XFinity has decided to move that channel to the a premium cable tier, which costs viewers an additional $20 a month.

Because of this, it looks like the viewership is going to go way down, blowing a huge hole in the M's payroll budget. So much for going after Ohtani, Soto, or Blake Snell (who is a native and is begging the Mariner's to make him an offer).

Looks like another wasted season of Julio, and lots of trotting out of the '95 and '01 players. And bobble-heads....so many bobble-heads

There was an explosion of euphoria yesterday in Cub world when they re-signed Bellinger.

At our local Greek breakfast place, a guy was wearing both a Cubs jacket and a Cubs hat. (Not a ballcap, but a driving cap - it looked really cool actually.) He had me beat because I just had a Cubs sweatshirt.

The Acuna knee news was unsettling. Probably nothing. Unless it is something. Glad my draft is late this year.

Bummer news...my friend's kid, who is a reliever for the Guardians, is having Tommy John surgery..

Guardians reliever Stephan to undergo elbow surgery
Stephan reported elbow discomfort at the beginning of camp. What was first reported as a deep bone bruise that shouldn't be of much concern turned into a nagging issue. Stephan visited with Dr. Keith Meister and Dr. Neal ElAttrache for more opinions and it was determined that Stephan's ulnar collateral ligament was not providing adequate stability, which caused more stress to his elbow.

"Trevor really wanted to find a way to pitch and stay active," Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said, "but as we got additional opinions from the various medical experts, they kind of reached the conclusion that it was probably in Trevor's best interest to get surgery now and that would put him in the best chance to be the best version of himself moving forward."

Not great but better to be rehabbing on the major league roster than demoted trying to pitch through it.

Ippei turns to Shohei in a postgame interview last August and says in Japanese:

“Shohei, the reporter just asked ‘What’s your mother’s maiden name?’”

Agreed. It’s bound to happen that a star in one of the Big 4 would get pinched in the new gambling era we’re in, but if it’s Ohtani that’d be crushing.

Pretty hypocritical of major sports administrations to get in bed with the gambling industry, yet be puritanical about athletes gambling on sports other than their own.

I've seen this before but the argument to me doesn't hold up. It's about keeping players from being leveraged / compromised.
