A_B wrote: Wed Apr 20, 2022 9:35 am I don't think Netflix is commoditized at all. The reason I choose to watch other platforms (While admittedly still having a Netflix sub) is because there is differentiation in offerings. HBO has the most movies I want to watch plus great shows. Apple TV+ has a couple of really good shows but it would probably be my first cut if dropping. Disney+ is not going anywhere, and probably not Amazon Prime either, despite it having the least things I watch. I've never thought Hulu had enough for me that I would use so I just borrow it when needed.

Maybe I am just looking at the word differently, but I view commoditization as the old model, where you got pretty much the same thing no matter which cable company you used. I don't think streaming has crept there just yet despite total prices being close to in line with old packages. While I can get CONTENT anywhere, they aren't truly offering the exact same thing.
Your TV tastes are just more refined than mine. 30 minute comedy, satire news show, 60 minute drama, 8-10 serialized thriller...Space Force versus Avenue 5, Stranger Thing versus Lost versus Outer Rim or Succession versus Billions versus Yellowstone, standup comedy special A versus B....Only so many hours in a day.

And Ozark 4.5! Who is dropping Netflix just before the Ozark finale?
People who are heading back to using PLEX servers, Kodi, Torrent websites...etc.

Realistically, streaming services were cheap enough to make pirating not worth it.

Now? Can't really say that. During economic downturns luxuries start going away.

Most people would not be able to consider doing this. These streamers aren't worried about the guys who will steal it, they're worried about the family that decides its too much.

They are starting to get too expensive, given HBO Max, Disney, etc are all out there. At the heart of this article, and as mentioned earlier, these other businesses are diversified to varying degrees.

I would be fine if they move forward with a cheaper version that included ads. We have Peacock right now, mainly for Yellowstone, and the way they do ads is just fine with me (60 seconds, at most, about 3 times an episode.) I get up and tidy the kitchen or one of us uses the bathroom or whatever. It's actually kind of nice, to be honest.

As it is, we'd probably drop Apple until the next Lasso season, as we really don't watch much else on that platform. But the price of Netflix is starting to become a tough pill. As mentioned in the article, they need to look at a quality of quantity model.

The 3rd season of Derry Girls won’t premiere on Netflix until September in the US, but it is out in the UK, now. Watched the first four episodes of the season. Big surprise in the fourth episode which I won’t spoil for you.

The most bizarre show I've seen since "The Way Of The Househusband" is "Thermae Romae Navae," a Japanese anime about a bathhouse designer in ancient Rome who ends up in modern Japan in every episode where he learns about Japanese bathing culture.

Based on a lengthy manga series, and proof that the Japanese will make shows (or manga) about almost anything.

Get stoned to watch it, it is almost impossible to describe.

Finished Ozark last night, and I'll just say the final half season was as good as the rest of the show.

One thing bothered me throughout the show that I never understood and there is probably an explanation. What's up with their cars? At first they were trying to lay low and not draw attention to the $millions in cash they were holding, so MAYBE driving a 30 year old Oldsmobile and a 20 year old Honda minivan made sense, but once they own half the businesses in town and a large successful casino and have a family foundation bringing in millions from highly powerful people, doesn't it seem more strange for them to keep the old crap cars?

Watched the first two episodes tonight, and maybe because I had an edible (and am Canadian), I laughed hard a few times.

Oh, it's very dumb. But if you're in the mood for some scatology and silliness, it's worth a viewing.

I agree, and it’s not. I watched the first two episodes. It’s stupid silliness, more like a poor man’s Austin Powers. It’s fun if you don’t think and enjoy it for what it is. I’m not expecting the rest to be “good”, but I’ll get some laughs

It's very Mike Myers, so it's very silly. I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes last weekend and spent more time grinning than outright laughing, but there was some of that, too.

The t-shirt the PA (or whatever she is for the Canadian TV reporter) is wearing is great.

Since its a wonderful rainy Memorial Day weekend (rain? In Seattle? On a 3 day weekend? Surprise, Surprise), I've powered through the end of Ozark.

It was ok...just seemed awfully rushed. Compared to how the other seasons were paced.

Johnnie wrote: Thu Apr 14, 2022 11:20 am This is a definite yes for me since I'm a huge Connelly fan:

This was decent and followed the book pretty well. But it was also produced by David Kelly so it did have an element of cable tv lameness that cable tv shows have. I don't know how to describe it, but when you watch something like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos or Billions, it's shot with different cameras or something and the way you can capture emotions and moods is so striking.

But when you watch a show that's on Fox or CBS, there's this superficial sheen to it. Like, have you ever watched an episode of NCIS or CSI and felt like it could just be better? You can tell a bunch of money was spent to produce it, but the scenes are too clean and bright? This series kinda had that about it.

If you're in the mood for a gritty - so gritty you can practically smell it - western, than Old Henry is just fine.

Tim Blake Nelson is great in the lead. Good...

But there is an absolutely unnecessary plot twist introduced near the end that is absolutely meaningless in terms of what is going on in the movie. Very strange.

Don’t let the runtime scare you off like it did me the first time I tried to watch it.

Paused it after 90 minutes.

Not because it's bad (it is unbelievable, just insanely entertaining), but because my brain needed a break.

Looking forward to finishing it this weekend.

Watched the first episode of (and this is a phrase I've never used before) a really intense Turkish crime drama/psychological thriller called Fatma this evening.

A slow building intensity and by the end of the episode I actually let out a yell. 6 episodes - looks promising.

The Gray Man is really good. Yes, it's a classic formula - not treading any new ground with the story here, but it's a well-made action movie.

And yeah, RRR is a lot of goofy fun. It's a movie you will laugh at and be amazed by at the same time.
