I’ve never seen it. I take it you guys recommend?
I wanted to like it, and some of the skits were funny. I do think it'd be a lot better stoned. It's a skit show that is very far down the silly and absurd road, which I like, but I found a lot of the skits more annoying than funny.

I really liked S2 thought it was interesting that a lot of the sketches had a weird tint of sadness in them. If you were inclined to over-analyze things might think that Robinson and Kanin are reflecting on getting older since that’s a reoccurring theme.

Watched "I Care a Lot" last night. I heard someone raving about it, assumed it was in here, but didn't see any mentions. It was good, not great. It was different than I expected. Thought it'd be a dark comedy, but it was mostly just dark material shot in a more comedic tone without jokes. Hard to explain, like the look and feel were almost RomCom, but the script was a fucked up story that took a more fucked up turn and just stayed fucked up. Some great moments, really good acting, and it was different. Plus it stars Peter Dinklage, and he is always great.

100% get that. Hit close to home knowing my parents are at that age. Been having a lot of discussions about their wills, the code for the safe, whether to put their house in an irrevocable trust in my name...

Which reminds me, we went to visit my parents last week. My parents went out to run an errand and my daughter said, "quick, let's steal stuff before they get back." I said, "no need, it'll all be ours soon enough." My daughter got the joke but didn't know how to react. My wife did not find it funny and was upset. My parents would have laughed their asses off if they heard it, and I absolutely would have made that joke in front of them.

Thought it was pretty good. It was from the Indiana players' perspective so it's not exactly an unbiased look, but it was interesting to hear from O'Neal, Arteest, and especially Stephen Jackson. I don't remember the media coverage fully except for the villianization of the Indiana players, but with today's perspective, I would think much more would focus would have been on security, the cops' actions (especially the cop asking Reggie Miller what he was doing on the floor), and the fan behavior. Also, I don't think that Indiana team would have won a championship if this brawl didn't happen. Artest was losing his mind and something else would have screwed up that team.

One of the worst "should have walked away" arguments I've ever had was with a friend-of-a-friend's fiancé about that incident like a month or so after it happened. The league's response should have been an unignorable black mark on Stern's reputation and the NBA. Jermaine O'Neal was initially suspended like 1/3 of a season for defending himself in what qualifies as his own fucking office.

(They ended up not getting married.)

No. One of the recurring messages was that the brawl cost them a chance to win one and they were confident they had a great chance to win.

I found the doc interesting but I'm feeling a bit of cognitive dissonance here. They promised unseen footage but I didn't really see anything that wasn't shown the night of. And I think it really stretches the truth when it comes to the media reaction. I mean, I don't think they faked any of the clips they showed, but how do you ignore that ESPN's same-night coverage absolutely lambasted the Pistons organization and fans and took the players' side? If you don't believe me here's a clip:

Also, the Spurs would have wiped the floor with those guys. Come on!

Thanks. I didn't remember the response as well as you did. The new footage claim was strange - either they oversold what they had or it was bad directing/editing.

A “documentary” produced by Jermaine O’Neal that doesn’t interview any of the Pistons organization from that night isn’t a documentary. It’s a screed.

I remember being extremely pro-Pacer in the aftermath of that. I don't care what your profession is, if someone throws a drink on you, you should be able to defend yourself. Any fucker doing that or going on the court deserved what they got.

Yup. That was a big part of my argument. It wasn't just "they had to be suspended for precedent" or something, it was full "what those players did was terrifying" versus "what those players did should be applauded". I was an Artest fan before that but became a full over-defender after.

Re: Netflix Suggestions?

It was and is a lot more complex than that. The two most culpable people are the asshole who threw the beer and Artest, for both the intentional foul in the last minute of a 15-point win and for over-reacting to what was not an especially violent act. It doesn’t excuse the behavior but pro athletes just can’t go into the stands. Then or now. Period.

Just finished the doc and it was OK but really felt like it needed more fleshing out somehow. I do feel like Jackson and O’Neal got a bit of a raw deal and I’m glad Artest has worked on his mental health over the years but it’s hard to say that he’s really at all a victim.

I don't agree with this. There's an invisible line between the players and the fans that can't be broken by either side but, if it is, whatever happens should be the aggressor's problem. If you throw something at Ron Artest or take a swipe at Tie Domi in the penalty box or mock Joe Jurevicius because his kid just died, you're fair game to repercussions.

So you’re saying Artest should have gotten a 0-game suspension? Ben Wallace should have been suspended for scraping with Artest on the court but Artest was completely in the right to go into the stands and attack the (wrong) fans?

I think:

1) Every situation is different.
2) Players have an absolute right to defend themselves (in this doc, the Oakland County prosecutor admitted as much saying Artest punching the fan who came on the court wasn’t a crime.)
3) Players have an obligation to comport themselves better than an average fan.
4) Leagues need to work with the teams to identify and punish “bad” fans including lifetime bans.

If the melee was set off by the fan coming on the court and Artest knocked him out (or a fan coming into the penalty box, etc) then everything’s fine. If Tom Wilson decides to punch out a woman for dumping popcorn on his head and his feelings are hurt that’s not exactly the same thing.

I think 3 and the lack of 4 (or the high bar for implementing 4) are why I am the way I am. Like didn't this happen in college a few years back between some 60 year old probable racist and a kid? In general, I think I mostly just hate live attendance sports fans.

It’s not a black and white issue for sure. Like what if a guy is yelling racial slurs and the arena security doesn’t remove the guy? I’d feel very understanding if a player decided to cold-cock the guy. I feel some understanding for Artest even in this situation but getting hit with an empty plastic beer cup isn’t exactly justification for starting World War III.

Or is it black and white???????

I do get what you’re saying and a beer cup isn’t much, but on the other hand I think there should be some real and immediate penalties for throwing a beer cup at Ron Artest.

Marcus Smart with Oklahoma State? The guy who came off the worst in the doc was the fan proud of his fighting players on the court.

Agree. If Artest didn’t have to go six rows into the stands as well. But just picking a spot in the crowd and going after whomever doesn’t really make me feel like Artest was treated super unfairly.
