Jersey Mike's is way better than WaWa. The comparison is laughable. Jersey Mike's actually has real deli meat and they slice it right in front of you like a proper deli. Maybe wlu just has a bad Jersey Mike's near him or something.

I forgot since I moved out of Palm Beach County so freakin long ago, but as I recall, Jon Smith Subs made a killer sub. As for local subs, I’ve always eventually found the best wherever I live, but 90% of them suffer from inferior bread (that’s not to say the chains sometimes don’t either).

Publix bakes their own sub rolls and slices from Boars Head. I guess they’re not national though.

Was Subway always as bad as it is now, or was I too naive as a kid to realize how bad it is? I think it fell off 25 or so years ago. Even more ironic that I've never eaten at Jersey Mikes. Had Jimmy John's once, definitely much better than Subway, but I'd only go back if there were no other options. Quiznos isn't good, but the toaster covers some flaws.

First off local is always #1
Variety plays a big factor for me. Actually why I liked Quiznos....
Capriotti's is vegas based. Actually surprised Brian was not a fan. Thanksgiving on a roll was my go-to. Good options, but they have closed most of the DC-area stores.
Jersey Mike's has no real variety. They are all basically the same and the bread is below average.
Wawa has strong customization and variety. But I recognize the goop factor.

I do appreciate the Harris Teeter daily special. Fresh baked bread and cut meats, but the employee behind the counter is key to a successful lunch. Price per value is very high if you stay on the special of the day.

All of this is so subjective but Jersey Mike's makes a perfectly serviceable sandwich and if I'm impressed because the quality is better than I've been trained to expect from the Subways and Quiznos and Jimmy Johns of the world that isn't Mike's fault. The fact that there is a local place on the same side of town as our JM that makes very similar sandwiches for about 1/2 the price is Mike's fault. Just wish that place was open Sundays, which is my primary "I want a sub for lunch" day of the week.

Our town finally warranted a Wawa and they had their grand opening over the weekend. Caving to pressure from the kids we had hoagies for dinner last night, and my only complaint is that they locked down the customize options on the turkey/stuffing/cranberry sauce sandwich (Gobbler(TM)) the past couple of years so I can't get it made with hot pepper relish anymore.

Wawa is my go-to road sandwich. Of course, when I’m driving to FL, you’re not getting a Wawa after VA and before SR 60 in So Fla. Wait. Maybe there’s one around St Augustine now.

There's definitely one in Ocala now as well.

This
I agree for the most part, but around here the best local shop closed about 10 years ago (it was so close to office, too!) so no real decent local options anymore. There's a small one called South Of Wrigley that does the italian beef and cheesesteaks but it was WAAAAAY overpriced and only fair. I'm going to give it another shot but if I'm on that road, the bagel joint is a better option. That's where I got the goetta, egg and cheese a while back.

As for pizza, I prefer Giovanni's, which is at least a regional name but not sure how organized it is. Menus vary wildly by location. There are a couple of good locals that I need to give a try to again and support them, though. Unfortunately I have failed as a parent and my youngest will eat basically only papa johns, which isn't very good, but the thin crust with one topping is usually serviceable.
