Did you say it wasn't Capriotti's? I know they're expanding quite a bit nationally.

ETA: Based on NLFC's comment, probably not then.

I took a glance, so I might have read the stats wrong. The site I pulled was pretty confusing (lots of categories mixed together.)

Newks is in the South. One near my sister-in-law in Atlanta's burbs. It is an expensive sandwhich, soup, salad. Brighter than Panera but not better.

I was thinking Newks was bought by Cava, but that was Zoe's kitchen.

There were two newk's here in town and neither survived the pandemic. One closest to me got replaced by a solid taco shop, whihc I suspect is regional at least - Agave and Rye

I've seen a newks but never once considered stopping to find out what it was. American deli is relatively ubiquitous here. No one has ever purchased a deli sandwich from there.

this thread says otherwise.

I like Jersey Mike's fine but from the list of top national sandwich chains I would have mcalister's and jason's above it for my preference.

The only thing I ask of a sandwich chain is that they make a credible Italian combo. I can make other sandwiches at home. But an Italian combo is too inefficient—it has too many meats I wouldn’t otherwise buy (and provolone, which is useless except in an Italian combo). That is a problem because an Italian combo is also the best sandwich, which also is not up for debate.

I’m familiar with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 from your list and the only one that makes a credible combo is Jersey Mike’s. I’m not a snob—I’ve had good sandwiches at all of them except for Jimmy John’s which is execrable. I’ll eat any of them except for JJ’s unless it is the caterer for a CLE and even then I might just grab the chips. But JMs is definitely on another level when it comes to combos.

Cheesesteak, parm sub, roast pork … there are many sandwich uses for provolone.

Primos is pretty great, and I still go there down at the shore sometimes. Really good bread. There used to be one on 22 near the Springfield/Union border. Which might as well be the other side of hell on a weekend afternoon.

I like Primos a lot, but frankly I find the bread a little too crusty. It’s fine if there’s a crunch on the outer shell, but it’s got to be doughy inside. I know they’re proud of it though, so I assume I’m in the minority on that front.

All their Italian variants are good / very good (personal fave being the Sharp Italian). Wife gets all in on it too with the Nonna’s Veggies.

The fact that there is a local place on the same side of town as our JM that makes very similar sandwiches for about 1/2 the price is Mike's fault. Just wish that place was open Sundays, which is my primary "I want a sub for lunch" day of the week.
Mr. Sun is indeed the shit. Taught the owner’s son. If I’m wearing HP gear, the old man gives me a discount.
Mr Sub.

I do love that if someone says "the sub place with the grumpy old man making the sandwiches" a lot of people in town will know exactly what they're talking about.

The best sub is an Italian grinder from Louie's in Rehoboth. I was in Dewey this weekend and fucked up by not just going by myself and grabbing one. (Big group and meals were all "kind of a thing."
