He may very well be. But he's probably the most accomplished US winter athlete on the team - certainly more accomplished that someone with one bronze in three prior Olympicses.

Yeah but with a bit of self-reflection, maybe he will recognize that acting like ass could cause people to vote against you.

Each federation gets one nomination and one vote. So 8 is based on the number of federations represented in the winter programs. Seems like a reasonable model.
Even more reasonable to add someone from the USOC to make it 9 and avoid a coin toss

USOC playing favorites for one sport association over another. I think the USOC staying out of it is smart.

Is there an overarching rule (or logistical reason) preventing two people from holding a flag at the same time?

I like how the short skate speed skaters just take bad luck and judgement calls on collisions/penalties. How did they judge that type of stuff before video review?

I'd assume that it's done so the skiier in front isn't at a disadvantage (having to plow out a track).

Impressive stuff from NBC, they're now running events on 30 minutes tape delay. What's the point of that?

To edit coverage and avoid breaks. There are a lot of breaks, delays, standing around and shitty runs during live coverage.
The commentators are stuck telling corny stories during waiting times.

Johnny Weir is like the gayest man in America, right? Nee, gayest person. Like if we had a draft for most gay person, even J-Lo would take him with the first pick. FFS, his primary fashion accessory is Tara Lipinsky! Sure, I love Little Richard, but this guy is the top of the mountain. (This Adam Rippon kid who skates for USA is off to a great career start.)

[/venting of pent-up homophobic tendencies] (I love Johnny and Tara)

I guess this team event figure skating was a thing last time, but it doesn't seem right. OTOH, I'm cool with the mixed doubles curling, mainly cuz it means moar curling.

Johnny Weir is Mike Pence's worst Nightmare/Dream Date.

I think that he and Tara are great together, but after watching some of the coverage last night, my GF and I both said "gah....so much figure skating".

Apparently, NBC announcers aren't required to do much due diligence on their commentaries. First, one guy enrages the Koreans with ignorant comments about their relationship with Japan, then Katie Couric pisses off the Dutch people by apparently believing they skate everywhere. I have a good friend who is Dutch who put up an incredulous post on fb about it.

These broadcasters certainly reinforce the stereotype foreigners have of Americans that we are insular folks who don't know much about foreign cultures.

The comments of Couric and Tirico during the opening ceremony were that wonderful combination of deeply ignorant and powerfully propagandistic. Granted my views are strongly contrary to the current flavor of propaganda; I literally had to turn down the sound. Clearly they were told what to say, but Katie Couric cannot possibly be as stupid as she seems this weekend, can she?

The presence of the North Korean delegation, of Ms. Kim Yo-jong, sister of the supreme leader du jour, and her meeting with President of South Korea Moon Jae-in are deeply historic, and all rational people hope portentous for continued movement toward peace and reunification. Even if that process takes another 50 years, this event will be noted. Despite our current media treatment (I am assuming it is as dismal as the NBC commentary, not like I would know by watching/reading that crap.)

Fuckwad Pence's actions speak for themselves. I hate these warmongering shitheads so fucking much.

At least it wasn't CBC. They are getting killed for their Opening Ceremonies coverage. Lots of talking about politics, too many commercials where almost no performances were shown in their entirety, laughing at the elderly Korean chant and the most egregious one:

THEY MISSED CANADA COMING IN! (deemed technical difficulties)

Their coverage was so bad they've taken the replay off their website. What is this? USSR?

I've tried this weekend - but I just don't give a shit about any of these sports.

Fun to watch a couple of them, but honest to god, watching 20 minutes of luge is about 19 minutes too many.

Feel the same way about figure skating. Don't get me wrong...have the utmost respect for the athletics involved (especially the pairs), and the amount of time that they had to put in to get to this stage, but after about 15 minutes it all looks the same.

I don't know what to make of this Ryder Cup style skating event. It's decent, but could use a little more Colin Montgomerie riding around in a cart.

Back in 1994 I was going out with a woman who had skated competitively at the junior and university level (and who taught figure skating on weekends). A number of her friends had skated competitively - I learned a lot about the intricacies of the sport and what judges look for and etc. etc.

And it's dumb. Very athletic, but nonsensical. And so open to fixes.
