Welcome back OCB!

The org I work for just was awarded another gift from Buffalo Trace to auction off. It’s a bourbon flight featuring one 750 ml bottle of each of the following:

E.H. Taylor, Jr. Amaranth Grain of the Gods Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

E.H. Taylor, Jr. 18 Year Marriage

I’ll have more details and a link at some point if anyone is interested or knows anyone who is a collector. All $ goes directly to Pathfinders for Autism.

Been drinking a fair bit of whisky lately (nice to be retired). Wanted to try some new stuff and I have to say I’m pleased with what I’ve acquired over the last couple months. Mid-priced stuff. Been focused on old fashioneds, sazeracs, manhattans, and vieux carrés. Started making manhattans with 4 parts whisky, 1 part red vermouth, 1 part amaro cio ciaro, some bitters, and a cherry - a recipe a good bartender turned us on to.
Anyway, here are my new whiskies:
Old Forester 1910 93 proof bourbon
Canoctin Creek single barrel 116 proof rye
New Riff single barrel 111 proof rye
(Gifts from my wife!)

Old Forester is usually really good. Even the cheaper ones. Catoctin - I've had the 92 proof Roundstone Rye. That ones tasty. Not familiar with New Riff though.

One of a few things I don’t love about my new home is the difficulty in finding good bourbon. When I came last summer I found a site that had weller, eh Taylor, Blantons all available for order but when we moved they were all sold out and no more around. They do have four roses and makers at most grocery stores, but I only sip occasionally and when I do I want what I like. Boo.

I haven't tried New Riff Bourbon yet, but it's on my short list. I like to read various review websites and find bottles that sound good. I am currently working on a bottle of New Riff Single Barrel Rye. My new favorite Rye. It has an extra kick of spice to it and is more complex than others I've had. And it's a cool looking bottle.

I enjoyed it. Had a couple on the rocks after a long day, which helps put you in the right mindset, but it was smooth, I thought. It's wheated and other and Maker's I generally like wheated so that probably made it better to my palate.

So I thought I'd do something for the environment today, so I stopped off at the liquor store and bought some Lost Monarch, a blended, Redwood Empire Whiskey (it blends I think 60% of their straight rye whiskey, and 40% of their straight bourbon). Oh, and they plant a redwood for every bottle they sell.

How is it? I've looked at that bottle many times.

I have a new favorite Bourbon. New Riff Single Barrel. I really enjoyed their Rye, too (see upthread). Label says orange peel and black cherry, I get a bit of peach. It'd be great with BBQ.

I’d like to know about that Redwood Empire, too. We get up to Sonoma County reasonably often. Might be fun to mix in spirit tasting with the wine tasting.

And I think I posted upthread about New Riff rye. Tasty stuff.

It's a good blend. Fruity. Herbal. Subtle pop. At under $40 I'd consider it a steal. Definitely makes me want to try the rye and then the bourbon that made this bourye.
