Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Cal? He played for some baaaaad O's teams.
BFJ is the town wizard who runs a magic shop. He also has a golem that he has trained to attack anti-Semites.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Nope. Cal was 5th, others outside the top 10.

1633 losses. Next was Yaz at 1589. Only played in one postseason (1973 Mets), would have won a WS if he had hung on for one more season.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
As a side note, in looking up Ernie Banks' splits, he is listed as having been involved in 15 "ties", which I assume to mean games suspended for darkness while tied. Could well be a modern record, and no I'm not aware of any way to look it up.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
He played in the era where I followed the game most closely. But I had no idea Staub played so long, much less that he was the biggest loser. He did come up young, but his last season in Detroit was the end of his time as a regular. That was just his mid thirties. I'm going to have to look into why this was not Banks.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Staub played in many more games than Banks. Pinch hitting makes a big difference.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
So true. Banks didn't just hang around. Once he wasn't a regular, he was gone. But while he was there, he was an iron man.
A factor I may have ignored was that great as Banks was, he didn't make it to the majors at a young age, as Staub did. In Banks' era, guys like Kaline, Killebrew, and Mathews came up young too. The difference? Banks may have eventually become Mr. Cub, but I imagine he may have still been dealing with racism. Robinson hit the Dogers only in '47. It took many franchises a long time to sign black players, and in the beginning they weren't leaning over backwards to give a major league shot to a black teenager who hadn't put up a track record.
Too, he may have also been delayed by military service in the Korean era. Mays was his peer, and he lost a couple seasons that way. But he was up with the Giants first.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
That is what the wiki says. Started with the KC Monarchs at age 19, in 1950. Then two years in the service, back to the Monarchs, then the Cubs in September 1953. Next season, '54 was his first full in the bigs, at age 23. 'Only' 17 full seasons.
I had forgotten that Durocher managed the Cubs.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
New trivia question: Due to blurry memories of being a kid, Staub wasn't this lone ancient dude like I remembered. A quick B-Ref check shows 8 other players besides Staub were active the first year I really remember baseball (1985) and born during my dad's birth year (1944) or earlier. Name them.

Tom Seaver. I remember having a card of him from around that time where he looked like a pudgy middle-aged guy on a company softball team. (The 80's White Sox uniforms were a big part of that.)

Seahawks backup running back Robert Turbin holds a unique record in NFL history. What is it?

It's yards (928), but I'll give it to you.Gunpowder wrote:Most rush attempts without a TD?
His passing/receiving counterparts would be Mike Kruczek (1185) and Gerald Riggs (1516), respectively.
