Re: All threads are temporary. This one's about soccer.
There are groups of hardcore fans in Toronto who - and it seemed really odd at the time - have been around since Toronto FC's first game. They seemed like wannabes at first, but they add so much to the games (and have never started fights or done anything worse than throw streamers at opposing corner kick takers.
I was once at an early round Concacaf Champions League game back when TFC was in the middle of like a 10 game losing streak. It was against the 3rd best team from El Salvador and there were maybe 2,000 in the stadium. But these guys drummed and chanted through the entire game. It was kind of funny.

Strangest line line was "Back in 2013, when MLS tried to prevent fans from chanting abuse at games.."
How can you go to a game on not have a chorus of "the referees' a wanker"?

Giuseppe Rossi, New Jersey born, Italian National Teamer, with some serious game and injury history banned 1 year for doping. Guessing that ends his career.

Wow, so much promise when he was young. Now Matt Miazga can take the Clifton, NJ mantle.

Derby County beats Man U in the Caraboo Cup! I know that's not what it's called, but I can't spell it right and I don't care to.

Also I know this makes me a bad person, but I'm never not gonna feel schadenfreude at the way Rossi's career turned out and especially now that he's a doper. Fuck him.

I've been following them since I saw them in the Texaco Cup Final back in '72 against Airdrieonians.
This is Derby's best win at Old Trafford

That was a great United team though.
And it's only 20 years ago, but the baggy shirts make it seem like it was from a completely different era.

Someone do a poll where the options are "I knew what Subbuteo was" and "I thought he really wlu_lax'ed whatever that word was supposed to be".
Re: All threads are temporary. This one's about soccer.
Even if you don't know what it is, have young soccer players in your household...it worth checking out. Good holiday gift.

When I was 11 or 12, a kid from England moved into my neighbourhood. He had all the subbuteo stuff... even light standards to place around the felt pitch for added authenticity. He had maybe 10 different teams - I remember that each colour scheme represented 5 or 6 different squads.
Good fun indeed!
This classic Undertones song includes Subbuteo in the lyrics. (and for the uninitiated, the band is playing the game at 0:40 and at 1:15)

How can you not mention Half Man Half Biscuit's "All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit" when discussing SubbuteoPruitt wrote: ↑Wed Sep 26, 2018 11:53 am When I was 11 or 12, a kid from England moved into my neighbourhood. I'd never heard that one Baloney posted, either. But, I do love the Undertones.

I saw them open for the Clash on the "Give 'Em Enough Rope" tour.
The fact that I once did cool things like that on a regular basis, and yet I just returned home from having dessert in an ultra-Orthodox neighbour's sukkah says everything there is to be said about aging.

Didn't he settle this out of court? Which means, yeah, something likely happened that would necessitate it, and that blows. But I don't see it affecting him anymore than all of the shit Trump has done and didn't get any blowback.

I can't figure out this purchase other than to get access to that site (that of the earlier proposed new stadium with the "sail" roof). Perhaps the tea leaves are such that Tampa and Hillsborough Co. don't have $$ for the proposed Ybor stadium. I know I'm not in favor of a tax increase to fund it. Sternberg can fuck right off about the Rays stadium, IMO. I like the Rowdies down by the water, but it's still striking how different the viewing experience is as compared to OCSC (and I hate OCSC!).Baloney wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 11:26 am Tampa Bay Rays buy The Tampa Bay Rowdies

I just found out that the City owns the Stadium, which makes it even less understandable. I'm with you on the funding of the stadium though, if Sternberg's not going to invest in the team, then no way tax $$ should go to them. I preferred the Rowdies at Steinbrenner field as it was easier to get to, but watching any soccer game on a baseball field pretty much sucks.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 2:16 pmI can't figure out this purchase other than to get access to that site (that of the earlier proposed new stadium with the "sail" roof). Agree 100%. I had season tickets for all (both?) years at Steinbrenner, and then for the first year at Al Lang. It was too far to travel to, especially considering my kids didn't give a shit about attending. Watching at a baseball field sucks, (although at least at Al Lang, they put the soccer pitch through the infield).Baloney wrote: ↑Mon Oct 01, 2018 2:47 pmI just found out that the City owns the Stadium, which makes it even less understandable. One of the MLS guys I follow (writes for the Athletic too) says Wynalda was not the top choice. But rather Las Vegas could not close the deal with Landon.

Jen and I going spur of the moment (decided to make the trip yesterday) to Cincinnati tomorrow for the first round USL playoff game FC Cincinnati v. Nashville. FC Cincinnati is on a 23-game unbeaten streak, all wins and ties since late May. That said, the two matches in that span against Nashville have been ties. Wondering if the city post-season curse extends to FC Cincinnati...

That was awesome. 0-0 after regulation. Cincy went up 1-0 in first extra 15, Nashville tied it with four minutes left in second 15. Went to PKs, cincy won 6-5. Great experience.
