For basic things like video calls and such, Teams is fine. But when you try to integrate it with other systems - even other MS services like SharePoint, for example - it becomes a clusterfuck. I still haven't figured out how I can send a link to a SharePoint file to another Teams user EXCEPT for manually copying and pasting the link address. Why Teams and SP don't talk to each other amazes me.

And if you use Teams to work with groups outside your MS tenant, it becomes an even greater clusterfuck (permissions get out of whack, basic features like attaching a file to a chat aren't available, status updates suddenly go missing).

But hey, my boss keeps telling me Office 365 is going to solve all of our technology problems, so I have that going for me.

If you're forced to go from Slack to Teams you wouldn't feel this way. Slack is intuitive and everything just works and Teams...is not.

I understood like ten percent of that.

I decided a couple of years ago that at my age, I'll try to run out the clock rather than learn any new technologies.

Then I had to have a crash course in Zoom and Webex, of course.

Have a running bet with a colleague for the W&L versus Roanoke in lacrosse. In past loser had to bake a cake and serve it to the other person at the office (and similar). W&L beat Noke this past Saturday. I now show up in his zoom background all week. Which is funny because everyone else is in our tech team are using some pre-built "women in tech" backgrounds. He keeps getting messages like "bold women in tech choice".

fuck, Sabo... i have no real advice but just serious empathy.

I've been in this situation a few times and i just don't ever know if it's sustainable. first time was my boss and i eventually got laid off (i'm pretty sure i detailed this years ago in Swamp v1.0)

Just recently I got lucky - the last year i have worked with literally the worst person i've ever had the "pleasure" of working with - i was not alone in feeling this way - and the most frustrating part was that she was actually nobody's boss. Just dominated every day, every co-worker, every meeting, and made people feel like complete shit. Typing it out doesn't nearly do it justice but my/our boss was completely ineffectual in doing anything about it/her (government!) and let her run roughshod over us all.

But -> her year anniversary is next week... and she has not been renewed, and calls in sick for every standup meeting now (2x/week). She'll be gone next Friday for good.

Anyways i guess i'm saying i would have quit (well, not before i'd found a new job) had she stayed on, because having that kind of stress on a daily basis was seriously damaging. I sincerely hope it hasn't gotten to that point for you :/

...any chance this boss could have been in DC in January*? Need us to comb through some FBI pictures?

*[i seriously think this aforementioned woman was in DC... in the year i'd worked with her she'd only taken one vacation day and on January 5th she announced she'd be out the rest of the week...]

A co-worker (also being laid off like myself) referred to our situation as “Operation Shutdown” which I thought the Swamp might enjoy. I’ve spent the last two hours at the bar myself, monitoring work from a cell phone. I definitely don’t fuckin’ care any more.

Update! I gave my two-week notice this morning.

I am massively burned out, and my mental and physical health are suffering. My goal is to take at least a month off so I can focus on getting better, and then I’ll figure out where I go from here.

Mrs. Sabo has been very supportive of this plan. If she had any kind of hesitation, I probably wouldn’t have quit. Fortunately we’re in a good spot financially, so I’ll have time to figure out what I want to do. I’m probably going to move out of technology completely and find another career. I might need to go back to school, but I don’t see that as a bad thing.

I submitted my resignation first thing this morning, and my boss - who just came back from vacation today - called me about 30 minutes later. He said he “was blindsided and shocked” by my resignation and wanted me to stay. I explained that I’m burned out and mentally exhausted, and that his management style was a major factor with my unhappiness.

My boss retorted I never told him explicitly that he did things that made me unhappy and that he would learn about my displeasure after the fact. When I expressed incredulity about that, he said I have a reputation as a curmudgeon and “you’ve come across as unhappy for as long as I’ve known you”. I should’ve hung up on him at that point.

My boss is now understandably freaked out, and he’s making overtures about trying to keep me. But his reaction - and the lack of awareness about how I felt - has only strengthened my resolve to leave.

So 2021 is shaping up to be a great year. I know I’m trading one set of problems for another, but at least I’m doing it on my own terms.

You know it’s a shitty fucking gig when you’re energized by the notion that not getting paid is better than dealing with those shitty fuckers any longer. I’m glad you got peace for mind for a little while.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone. The last few months have been rough, and yesterday was a very strange day. But it's the first steps of a new journey, and we'll see how it goes.

I get what you're saying, but it's been a very good gig for a long time. I started to sour on it in late 2019, but the aggravation spiked after I got my new boss. The saying "You don't leave jobs, you leave bosses" definitely applies with my situation.

On video, we are all on camera staring at our computers doing other work. It's just weird knowing 2 people are watching me as I type this.
