Luckily no one killed and only one person serious injured. It's a long way down right there.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

That is fantastic, but going to Bills games ruined Shout for me, and 25 years has not changed it.

Fuck, could you imagine the emotions you'd be feeling in that room if you devoted your career to building the rover or planning the descent? Unreal. I got chills watching it.

Re: Random Videos
The day the Perseverance rover landed, the National Geographic channel aired a two-hour documentary about how they built the rover. After seeing it, now I understand why these missions cost billions to produce. The engineering required to build these things is astounding, and they had to invent multiple things just to build the unit. For example, one of Perseverance's main missions is to drill Martian rock and then store it in tubes for retrieval by a future Mars mission (which by the way, will be the first mission ever to land on another planet and return to Earth, which is pretty mind-blowing). Because they want to ensure what they retrieve are actual Martian rock samples instead of particles from Earth that happened to get a round-trip visit to Mars, they had to create new air filtration systems for the clean rooms to improve the air quality from millions of particles per cubic meter air to hundreds of particles per cubic meter of air. They sample tubes they machined were so clean that they generated too much friction with the drill and would get stuck. The engineers assembling the unit were so precise that if they dropped a screw or bolt during assembly, they had to disassemble the affected area to make sure it hadn't been damaged. Some of the gaps between bolts and the holes were they were inserted were no more than ten-thousandth of an inch. It made for fascinating viewing. The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 8:34 pm Fuck, could you imagine the emotions you'd be feeling in that room if you devoted your career to building the rover or planning the descent? In 2012, NASA landed the Curiosity rover, which is still (!) working on the Martian surface. When it landed, they could only ensure they would land within a seven-mile by 20-mile landing area. The Perseverance landing unit had much better radar and landing information that they knew they could land it within a planned 130-foot-wide area. It's crazy how precise things have become.
And just for the hell of it, here's the landing video for the Curiosity rover. I remember watching this in amazement when it first landed. Now it looks shitty compared to the Perseverance landing video.

There's no way to actually control the rover as it heads down, right, because of the light lag? It all has to be pre-programmed?Sabo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:56 pmThe day the Perseverance rover landed, the National Geographic channel aired a two-hour documentary about how they built the rover. Correct. It takes a little more than three minutes for a signal from Earth to reach Mars, so everything is scripted.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 10:08 pmThere's no way to actually control the rover as it heads down, right, because of the light lag? It all has to be pre-programmed?

Re: Random Videos
It's even better than that. The rover used cameras (and maybe lidar?) on the bottom to scout out the landing area, choose a suitable spot, and then fire its rockets to navigate itself there. And it worked.Sabo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 10:25 pmCorrect. Fucking good call, Reaper. The Avalanches had some great
sampling in a lot of their records and I still throw them on from time to time much to the chagrin of Mrs. Serrano.

That took me down a fun rabbit hole. Never heard of The Avalanches, but I enjoyed the hell out of their videos and really liked the music. Just pure absurdity. I love the video with a little kid singing and dancing in a NYC subway station trying to impress the woman in the booth. Genius.
