I love the Sky show Fox Soccer used to show where they invite one fan from each team to call the game. Always moments of hilarity. Plus, the ribbing and over-the-top homerism is fantastic.

I was this close to posting their new name/look in the uniforms/logos thread yesterday. And I read a half-dozen articles about it; in each of those the comments were almost entirely negative. But it occurs to me that all of that was English media. The team effectively has a bilingual name. In French it is the Rouge et Noir. That makes sense, historic and contemporary. One of the biggest college teams in the country is the Université Laval Rouge et Or (Red and Gold). English people are missing that it is aimed at a French demographic and, it being Ottawa, there's a huge element of PC to it.

Having said that, yes, RedBlacks is unspeakably fuckawful. There's a thousand things wrong with it and nothing sensible. It's not a real word, for one. It doesn't describe any actual entity. It's just the two dominant colors of their uniform, stuck together. Bruce Arthur said that they might as well have called themselves the ShoulderpadHelemts.

If the idea was to appeal to both English and French (that area is heavily bilingual), why not pick one of the thousands of words that the languages share and are typically spelled the same? Or at least pronounced the same? That's what the Ottawa NHL team did.

Yes why is it that it sounds so much better in other languages. As you mentioned there is the Laval Rouge et Or.
Italian Serie A teams are called by their colours.

Milan: Rossoneri
Inter: Neroazzurri
Roma: Giallorossi

Oh, for sure. Sometimes it works. As with the New Zealand All Blacks.
I would imagine that in most, if not all, of those cases it is because the nicknames evolved naturally. Liverpool FC, for example, are simply The Reds. Those teams existed long before marketing a team's brand became a significant part of operations.
Forcing RedBlacks on people while claiming it is the city's heritage is incongruous. It's not the city's heritage, you just made it up a couple of weeks ago!

Since they already used another name that was in use, why not take another name that's already taken? Ottawa Eskimos or Ottawa Stampeders.

One of the names they were kicking around earlier was Ottawa Nationals. That would have been nice. And it is historically an Ottawa sports team nickname.

Team President Jeff Hunt is now requesting that media write the REDBLACKS name in comic sans only. No other fonts are permitted, as they do not reflect the city's heritage.
