Re: Oscars 2014
Interesting that a year with many fine movies and performances nominated, a pretty narrow consensus of likely winners has formed, in the media and to a lesser degree here.
Independent Spirit Awards last night partially affirmed, with their narrow sample of Oscar nominees. 12 Years, McConaughey, Blanchette, Leto and Lupita. They really liked Nebraska too. Hey, I watched cause I didn't have plans, and I really like host Patton Oswald.
(I prob won't watch tonight, cause I don't think Ellen is funny. And way back, I thought she was incredibly funny, but something happened.) (Plus, zombies are on. Plus, Cohle and Hart keep looking for the Yellow King. Plus, Girls.)

Re: Oscars 2014
I'm debating if I'm going to watch. Was supposed to go a party (and still could go, I guess) but plans have changed around here and I'm wrapping up work.
So I could just avoid, or I could fall into the trap. Definitely can't not watch and be on the internet though. That'll drive me mad.

Really? That soon after the Olympics? Does my boy Kevin Martin still compete, or is he retired?Scottie wrote:The Brier is on. Go watch the Brier.

I never understood the fascination with U2. Or is this just a bad song.

Re: Oscars 2014
Martin lost the Alberta final to Kevin Koe. And it was a helluva game; two Brier winners, each world champions, although Martin has more pedigree. Just bad luck in the last couple of ends for Martin, a game he controlled but got away from him. Likewise, Glen Howard lost Ontario on his last rock of the provincial final in terribly unforeseeable fashion. You should be cheering for, oh, British Columbia.

Def. She was good but Lawrence was better and her part was bigger. But the emotional content probably won out. 12 years was a really good movie and I think it will win best pic.degenerasian wrote:That was cool. Pure joy when Lupita won.

Jonze deserved it. weird movie but the epitome of original. i thought their set design shoulda won, also their orignal score. the music in that movie was great.
also my signal is flaking because of ice storm, so i hope i can hang on for the last four or five categories.

Re: Oscars 2014
The Independent Spirit Awards nailed five of the big six, missing only on director. I don't know if that is a good or a bad sign, but the fact that the quality of the films nominated for Oscars this year is so high may not be a coincidence; that 'small, indy' films nearly swept.
I can't remember a year with so many nominees that I personally like and respect so much, and so few that I dislike and consider untalented. I might have to resume going to the movies if Hollywood keeps this up. Apparently Gravity demands being viewed on the big screen.
AB, your girl was funny tonight.
