Sounds like it's just the immediate compensation. $5k per next of kin per passenger, to help offset immediate financial impacts (missed work, etc). Pretty sure the international agreement on airline accidents, set in Montreal, mandates they give $175,000 per passenger. Perhaps that isn't done though until investigation is complete.tennbengal wrote:Malaysia Airlines apparently offering $5K per passenger. Maybe they can kick in an FTD bouquet while they are at it...

Yeah, the story I read clearly stated that was immediate compensation to cover things like degen mentioned.degenerasian wrote:Sounds like it's just the immediate compensation. $5k per next of kin per passenger, to help offset immediate financial impacts (missed work, etc). Friend at work had the best theory:
The plane was randomly selected as part of a reality show. The plane was taken to an undisclosed location where everyone will live Survivor style for a month and then magically wander back into humanity. This entire "missing plane" was an elaborate way to drum up buzz when it premiers this summer.

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
I know I am beating a dead horse here, but I saw a bit of CNN with the sound off at the gym. I tried to avoid the closed captioning, but can't stop sometimes. The headline was something to the effect of, "Internet websites theorize that plane landed in [insert small island whose name I can't recall]." 30 minutes of discussion followed. Repulsive. They are dedicating large chunks of coverage to tin hat websites in a non-ironic way. WTF?

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
Yes! That is the island (actually atoll) I couldn't think of. US naval base must not have radar, or it is a US military plot! Why is it so hard to believe that the plane crashed somewhere within an extremely large area in the ocean and the logistics of covering that entire area is impossible, especially since whether issues kept delaying the search? According to internet website, the Pacific is as much as 2 miles deep in some parts of the search zone. Even with advanced technology, we can't see everything.Johnnie wrote:Has anyone mentioned Diego Garcia during this madness?

Basically not a good year for Malaysian Airlines.

Yeah, note to self: No malaysian airlines flights. Ever.

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
Isn't it a bit surprising that a major international airline would route planes over Ukraine? Perhaps they make a few low passes over Syria and Gaza too.

Might want to brush up on those old nuclear emergency drills.
Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
it is not as if the civil war in Ukraine is being fought over a wide area. currently a very small battle zone. this stinks of false flag.
I'd been meaning to post a few thoughts on this war. I will later but a teaser--this is how major wars start (as almost occurred when the USSR shot down a Korean Air Lines flight back inthe 80s and we didn't learn how close to war we came for more than a decade)

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
The USA took one of their black ops planes, filled it with bodies (sourced from their offshore detention and interrogation centers) and blew it up with a Russian missile. A little internet hacking turned this into a Malaysian Airlines plane. That's diplomacy, modern style.

The pics that showed up on my various twitter feeds of portions of the raw wreckage that included a lot of dead bodies was kinda twitter at its worst.

23 Americans too.
And, yes, the raw crash pics are best avoided. Unless fuckfaces on your twitter feed just put that out there. Like, say the lead meterologist at Channel 2 locally in Baltimore. I mean, really. wtf, dude.

SPOILER WARNING: The dude in his seat is just absolutely fascinating to me. It's proof that the missile didn't get the plane entirely and a portion of it was still intact and people and things started spilling out.

That's the entire point of seatbelts in airplanes in the first place: to keep the bodies from being astrewn all over the place in the event of an accident.
However, this wasn't your typical accident and it still worked in that case.

Right... But I'm saying that it's not like the plane got entirely blown to smithereens and everything was torn apart while it happened. For that to look like, well, that, means there likely was a significant part of it still fairly intact.Johnnie wrote:That's the entire point of seatbelts in airplanes in the first place: to keep the bodies from being astrewn all over the place in the event of an accident.

Apparently now the bodies have been put into a truck and driven 'somewhere'.
The Netherlands are royally pissed. I heard that the Dutch PM called Putin and yelled at him.
But the Netherlands is such a small country what can they do? Could NATO get involved? Could a war start over this?

Considering how the US and Soviets almost went to war over the downing of that Korean Air flight back in the 80s, I'm going to go with "yes" on your last question.degenerasian wrote:Apparently now the bodies have been put into a truck and driven 'somewhere'.

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
Apparently that applies to just some of them, and to the flight recorders. Most of the bodies that have been recovered are sitting in "refrigerated" train cars waiting for someone to decide where they can/should go, and when they can be sent wherever that ends up being.degenerasian wrote:Apparently now the bodies have been put into a truck and driven 'somewhere'.

Re: This Is The Thread Discussing The Missing Plane
It's been almost a year since Flight MH370 disappeared. I was obsessed with this story last year. When it happened, I was going thru a difficult time, and this allowed me to fixate on something other than myself for a few weeks. I would wake up every morning and read transcripts of the press conferences, then check to see if any of the amateur investigators on Reddit had solved the case yet. (Spoiler: they hadn't.) Everything about this still seems so strange to me.
So I'm reading anniversary articles now. The great Sean Flynn just published this in GQ. I'm going to savor it over the course of the afternoon.
Jeff Wise published this last week. I was looking forward to it, but he kind of lost me by the time he got to 'Putin did it.' I'll still probably read his book, tho, because I can't get enough of this stuff.

Hell if I know. The simplest answer is probably the best: A cabin-pressure issue that knocked everybody out, then auto-pilot until crashing into the Indian Ocean. Not as sexy of a theory as a landing strip in Kazakhstan, but I can't buy into the mustache-twirling stuff.howard wrote:Cuz Putin hates Malaysia!bapo! wrote:…he kind of lost me by the time he got to 'Putin did it.'
