From the Times.
Asked why Mr. Gasser was freed if he had admitted to the shooting, he" (the sheriff) "said that in Louisiana there were some “relative statutes that provide defenses to certain crimes.”

You can't even do the hypothetical "what if the exact same situation happened but the actors were reversed" because (1) its too preposterous and (2) no one would defend McKnight whereas like 40% of this dipshit country will defend this murderer.

Only thing that gives me hope is there are witnesses (and hopefully video cameras). If it went down like a couple of witnesses claim it did there's no way it was justifiable homicide or self-defense.

The obvious implication of cases like this is that law enforcement officials view simply being a black male as sufficiently threatening to white people to support a self-defense claim. It doesn't matter if you're unarmed and if the white guy is in his car and can lock the doors or drive away.

In other depressing news, the South Carolina jury couldn't reach a verdict in the shooting of Walter Scott, even though the cop was caught on video shooting an unarmed man in the back.

The Sheriff already said that he doesn't believe any of those witness accounts and that there are no videotapes.

mcknight was shot 3 times. the casings for each round were found in the suspect's automobile. according to abc news, this fact (that mcknight was out of his vehicle while the shooter wasn't) was the reason the shooter was released without being charged.

if only the shooter had a way to escape the situation...

Apparently if a black man approaches your car (even on the passenger side, as was the case here), you can just assume they're an armed carjacker and shoot them? I have no idea how else the fact that Gasser was in his car while McKnight was not could possibly lead to the conclusion that Gasser had reason to fear for his life. It's unfathomable that there wouldn't already be charges brought if the races were reversed.

If the races were reversed - so the black guy had the gun? There would be no charges. Because the cops would shoot the black guy.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I wonder if he would have been charged if not for McKnight's notoriety.

I'm curious what the rationale is for manslaughter instead of murder. I'm not familiar with Louisiana law but I wonder if the DA views it as an "unreasonable self defense" case -- i.e., Gasser actually believed he was in serious danger but that belief was not reasonable under the circumstances.

I wouldn't be surprised if the truth were more along the lines of..."Go home and sober up. We'll make a statement to the press next week that no competent investigation would ever make to set up how you're going to beat the um...charge. If we keep you here, it'll become obvious to people you're intoxicated..."

Olympic skiing champion Jean Vuarnet dies aged 83
The former French Olympic skiing champion and entrepreneur Jean Vuarnet has died at the age of 83, his family has announced.
Vuarnet, who gave his name to a world-famous brand of sunglasses, won gold in the downhill event in the 1960 Winter Olympics in California.

He is credited with inventing an aerodynamic crouch for downhill skiing known as the "egg".

Vuarnet was also the first person to win the event using metal skis.

His aerodynamic ski position has been copied and perfected by generations of skiers, says the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris.
At that competition in California, Vuarnet also wore a new type of anti-glare sunglasses provided for the French team.
And for us older types, Vuarnet's were a must-have fashion accessory.
