enough time has passed that i don't remember my opinions on Jimy either but another thing I'd forgotten - this is from Craig Calcaterra's newsletter today:

Most people would probably say that Williams’ top achievement as a manager was winning the 1999 Manager of the Year Award. Personally, I think his top moment came on September 25 1997.

Longtime Atlanta starter Steve Avery had signed with the Red Sox before the 1997 season. It was a one-year deal for a $4.85 million, but if Avery made 18 starts it’d trigger a $3.9 million option for 1998. Avery sucked eggs, however, and the Sox pulled him out of the rotation following his 17th start of the year on August 31. The Red Sox weren’t exactly in a pennant race that year — they finished in fourth place — so It seemed pretty clear that the primary reason Avery was sent to the bullpen was so that Boston wouldn’t have to pick up Avery’s option.

Except on September 25 Jimy Williams named Avery his starter in a meaningless game against the Detroit Tigers. Avery taking the hill in the first inning that day triggered his $3.9 million option. After the game Williams admitted that that was his intention, too, saying that if the Red Sox were perceived to have messed with Avery’s incentives like that future free agents wouldn’t trust them and would sign elsewhere. Oh, and Avery shut out the Detroit Tigers on two hits over five innings and the Red Sox won so not only was it an honorable decision, it was a good one too.

Way to stick it to the bosses, Jimy. May you rest in peace.

I remember he was fired the day after being booed at MMP when managing the all-star game in 2004.

Hated Jimy one "M" when he managed the Jays.

It was as if he wrote out his moves before the game started and then would make them regardless of the situations as they arose. Cito Gaston - a guy who was never hired by another team - took basically the same team that Williams couldn't make the playoffs with - to the playoffs four out of five years and led them to two world series titles.

That's how I viewed Jim[m]y Williams. He was the guy that would get a good roster to a decent place, plateau, and then the next guy (or in the case of Boston, next-of-the-next-guy-not-including-Joe-Kerrigan-as-interim) would get them to the promised land.

Glad he picked up a ring as a bench consigliere for the 2008 Phillies. Seemed like a good guy. I shot the breeze with him for a few minutes down in spring training that year at the old Al Lang Field.

WE bought tickets. This was in the late 90s or very early 2000s. i want to say pre 9/11 because he hadn't gone full parody at that point. He was the headliner, played about 45 minutes, sound was terrible and he was a bad showman. It was in Freedom Hall, so I get that it's a big venue, but it was just bad all around.

If you look it it up, he did try to join but was refused. When it's not a time when men are needed, the service can be picky about health issues. Kristofferson was in but refused entry to Viet Nam. He quit then. Keith chose to serve with his music instead.

I will likely never forget the phrase "Keith chose to serve with his music instead". Its perfection.

Damn! I liked listening to Mojo on Outlaw Country. I actually saw him in concert at a little club in San Jose way back in around 1990. As you would guess, he was crazy. Had these great merch shirts for sale - oil-stained denim shirts, sleeves torn off, with a little name tag like you’d see on some tradesman’s uniform, saying “Mojo”. Wish I’d have bought one.

A sailing friend, who was a commercial charter pilot, died in a plane crash yesterday.

Plane crashes on Utah-Colorado border with two on board, no survivors found

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the plane, a small, privately-owned passenger plane, crashed just over the Colorado-Utah border with two people on board. According to authorities, the plane was a chartered aircraft headed to Tacoma, Washington from Grand Junction. First responders said that neither have been found. The identities of the two people who were aboard the flight is also unknown.

Just a bummer...knew the guy for over 20 years. Sailed together on lots of different boats...many conversations while sitting on the rail, or over drinks at the Yacht Club afterwards.
