Quintessential THAT guy from movies I loved in the 80s.

Red Miller.
It was so exciting to be a fan of the Broncos in Red Miller's first couple years as their head coach. The team had sucked fantastically through the 1960s and early 1970s. Then, John Ralston got them over the first hump to a winning record, but alienated the players to such a degree that they basically revolted against him. Enter Red Miller, who promptly led the Denver Broncos to the postseason for the first time in team history. Under him in 1977, the Broncos played in their first Super Bowl. RIP.

The Orange Crush defense. Craig Morton. Haven Moses and Rick Upchurch.I remember the 1977 season (12-2) and playoffs. Biletnikoff gets hurt in the first half of the AFC Championship, a big 'what if' for Raider fans.

The real big "what if" about that game was about getting the call wrong on the Ron Lytle "non-fumble" on the Raider's 1 yard line.
Here's a big write up on it: THE FUMBLE THAT WASN’T
“In the 1977 American Conference championship game, the Denver Broncos were leading the Oakland Raiders, 7-3, in the third quarter when the Bronco running back fumbled at the Raiders' 1-yard line. Jack Tatum recovered. Raider ball. Or so everybody watching television thought. They saw the fumble. They saw the Raiders recover it.
But the head linesman, Ed Marion, didn't see the fumble. So the fumble never happened. The Raiders argued. Nobody listened.
On the next play the Broncos scored to go ahead, 14-3. They would win, 21-17, and go to Super Bowl XII in New Orleans, while the Raiders would never forget it.”
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
What never gets mentioned is that on the play before the Lytle pla, Jack Dolbin of the Broncos caught a touchdown pass, but was ruled to be out of bounds. But he was in bounds.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Man, I had let that shit go (had to clear room in my brain for the tuck rule).
It is funny, recalling the old arguments, one side with the immaculate reception and that Lytle fumble, the other side (us good guys) with the holy roller and the sitckum (Fred and Lester Hayes), and the numerous spygate-style scandals and the Stabler knee down pass to Clarence Davis. They tell me the calls all even out, but it doesn't feel the way.
Fucking Fred. Cliff Branch. Phil Villapiano (intercepted Griese with a minute left to quash the Dolphins last chance, not included in this youtube clip, but there are plenty of other vids if you want more.) Of course Madden and Snake. Bill King; that is when turning down the TV sound and turning up the radio originated for me (my dad was a genius.). That was one hell of a game. Here's a flashback, feel free to ff to 4:30 for tl;dw version. "The promised land is eight yards away!"

I was going to say I just heard a podcast [Rogan's] where a couple comedians were joking about Ralphie dying, but they were probably always joking about Ralphie dying for the past 20 years, so not odd.

First show I worked on was hosted by a great guy - Dan Gallagher. 6' 4" 380 pounds. He had a good career going up here for a while. Dead at 43.

Fair point. I think comedians compound that with a life on the road, constantly surrounded by drinking and drugs.

Even if they do that on a small scale (or not at all), just the irregular travel schedule often leading to poor eating/exercise/sleep doesn't help.

Yeah, but it's cheating for us old guys to answer.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

So (and it took me forty years to piece this together), the Governor must have been Mary's sister too.
