Borderline for getting his own thread. The Smothers Brothers were a big part of getting me interested in comedy at an early age.

Definitely went through a Smothers Brothers appreciation phase at some point when I was a kid. Must have been repeats on that my parents watched.

Yeah, they also deserve respect for wearing their anti-Vietnam War views on their sleeves, and standing up to the conservative CBS suits.

I can’t remember why exactly even though it was through the food business (my Dad worked at Sysco for years), but he had dinner with him several times.

Me too. I think when Nick at Night started, maybe? I remember my parents showing me the Smothers Brothers and Fernwood Tonight. At first I felt guilty laughing at Tom, because the jokes were all him being dumb, then at some point I realized it was an act. Similarly, I had a visceral hatred of Steve Martin when I was young. Didn't understand the arrogance was an act.

On Gilbert Gottfried's podcast, he and some other older comic (whose name escapes me) were goiong on and on about what a complete prick Shecky Greene was.

My father thought he was funny though.

Me too. He's namedropped in one of the Le Batard rejoins and I honestly assumed he died even before the 80s. Guess I need to brush up on my borscht belt comedy.

Noooo! This is so bizarre learning the news this way. Dave was my secretary for 5 years when I worked for the government, and I considered him a friend. Absolutely great guy, always chipper with an incredible wit and always willing to jump in and help. He was very humble and uncomfortable with attention, so one day our boss decided to out Dave and tell everyone that he was the star of Dawn of the Dead. We had a watch party in the conference room two days over lunch, and Dave gave all sorts of commentary on the movie, behind the scenes stuff about the actors, how certain scenes were changed from the script, etc... It was an incredible experience. Also hilarious in one scene when he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant and they are celebrating over dinner. She is drinking wine and smoking cigarettes, and our boss started yelling at Dave, "how can you let her drink and smoke, she's pregnant!"

Dave was asked to be in the remake but refused. Most of the rest of the cast did it, we were pushing him to do it, but he didn't want to. He went to a bunch of comicon type events and did autograph signings. He used to come back with the best stories about the freaks attending those things and what they would say or do to the actors. He came back from one where he shared a table with Jeri Ryan, 7 of 9 from Star Trek, and describing these incels trying to talk to her was hilarious.
